The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 392

"I'm sorry..."

The driver could only offer frantic apologies.

Faced with Ronan's barrage of insults, he didn't dare talk back.

Ronan barked a few more reprimands before scoffing, seemingly bored of his own tirade. "Screw up like this again, and you can pack your bags."

Panic gripped the driver's chest. "I'm so sorry, it won't happen again, I swear! Please, whatever you do, don't fire me. My wife suffered a severe stroke and is completely paralyzed. She's in the hospital, and her bills are billed by the day... If I miss a single payment, she could die!"

Ronan fell silent on the other end of the line. After a long pause, he muttered, "Fine, whatever. Just make sure you get the car's dashcam fixed."

"And you don't need to come pick us up tomorrow. Michael is going to rest at the house and won't be going out. Take the day off. Got it?"

"Got it!"

The driver agreed eagerly, which finally satisfied Ronan. "Yeah. We're done here."

He hung up without another word.

Staring at the disconnected call screen, the driver clumsily typed into his GPS, found the nearest late-night auto repair shop, and followed the glowing route on the screen.

...

Nora wasn't entirely used to sharing a bed.

But she had been so utterly exhausted the night before that she slept like a rock.

So much so that when she woke up the next morning and found her side of the bed empty, she completely forgot Valerie was even there.

Which meant that when she pulled open the bathroom door and locked eyes with Valerie, who was sitting right on the toilet, Nora froze in shock.

Valerie, on the other hand, didn't even blink.

"Look, I know we're tight, but you really don't need to watch me pee."

"Save that level of intimacy for your man."

Nora was speechless.

Was it possible that absolutely no one needed to watch anyone use the bathroom?

She silently backed out of the room.

A knock sounded at the door. Hearing their chatter and knowing they were awake, Nathan didn't wait for an invitation to speak. "Breakfast is ready. Nora, we need to hurry. We have to head to the precinct this morning."

"Okay."

Nora didn't ask why. If Nathan was the one bringing it up, it likely wasn't an emergency callout for a murder.

"Well, looks like I'm on Grandpa-duty by myself this morning," Valerie sighed.

"Maybe you can pivot your interview from Nathan to Mr. Peyton," Nora suggested.

Valerie gasped, her eyes wide.

"Are you a secret genius?"

Nora didn't indulge her nonsense. Once she was ready, they headed downstairs together.

After sharing breakfast with Harold, Nora and Nathan drove straight to the precinct.

"Orders from above. We have a new assignment."

"The Special Task Force has been light on cases lately, so this one goes to you."
