The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 397

"You?"

Nora raised an eyebrow in sheer disbelief. "Are you a massive Michael Devereaux fan too?"

Nathan gave her a deadpan look.

He didn't say a word, but his eyes screamed exactly what he thought of that idea.

Nora couldn't help but laugh at her own joke.

A man like Nathan Peyton fawning over a celebrity? And a male pop star at that?

It was statistically impossible.

"I mean, you've never shown an ounce of interest in anything pop culture. Why the sudden desire to tag along?"

Nora had never been to a fan event herself, but she imagined they were incredibly tedious.

Plus, it meant standing face-to-face with the star of the hour.

How exactly did Nathan plan to explain a homicide detective crashing a fan meet-and-greet?

"We need an opportunity to get face-to-face with him regarding the threats."

"Isn't a meet-and-greet the perfect cover?"

It was a solid plan.

But—

"Are you really going to question him at a fan event?"

The venue would be packed with Michael's most die-hard, obsessive supporters.

What if the news leaked and sparked a mass panic?

"Do you honestly think Valerie would grab a megaphone and announce to a room full of people that someone is trying to murder her idol?"

"The place will be crowded and chaotic. Plainclothes officers slipping into the mix won't draw any attention. It also gives us a chance to scan the crowd and see if any stalkers or suspicious individuals are lurking around."

"Even if rumors leak, Michael's PR team can handle the crowd control."

"When it comes down to protecting their idol, die-hard fans can keep a secret better than anyone."

Nora looked impressed. "You seem to know an awful lot about this."

"I just made a basic psychological profile based entirely on your best friend."

He was basically saying Valerie was completely unhinged when it came to Michael.

"Because you're treating me like a dirty secret."

Technically, everyone knew they were engaged. It wasn't like they had to hide their relationship. If they stood close to each other, no one would bat an eye.

But every single time Nathan tried to show her affection in public, she panicked like they were having an illicit affair.

He understood her being shy around strangers.

But these were his detectives. They all knew the truth. Yet Nora still reacted like they'd been caught committing a crime.

It made Nathan seriously question himself.

Nora hadn't realized her reaction affected him that much. She gave a helpless laugh. "I just don't think we should be overly affectionate on the clock."

"Besides, it's awkward when everyone starts teasing us. Don't you think?"

Nathan answered with absolute, shameless honesty. "No."

Every time his team hyped them up and called them a match made in heaven, his ego practically touched the sky!

Nora choked on her next words.

She thought about it for a second, then finally caved. "Fine... from now on, when we're alone, it's fine. But not in front of people. Deal?"
