The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 396

"Cross-reference everyone on that list and confirm exactly how many people received this letter."

"Group 2, take the letters."

"I'll hand over the originals in a second. Take them straight to the Forensics Lab and see if they can pull anything usable off the paper or the glue."

"The rest of you will run point on interviewing the celebrities."

"Remember, absolute discretion. Keep this completely under the radar."

If they dragged a dozen A-list celebrities into the precinct for questioning, it would cause a media circus and spark widespread panic.

Honestly, Nathan would have preferred to just haul them all in.

But these stars were scattered all over the country. Setting up face-to-face interviews meant working around their chaotic schedules.

It was a logistical nightmare, which was why he assigned the bulk of the team to handle it.

As the medical examiner, Nora's primary job was autopsies.

Outside of that, she acted as a floater.

She went wherever she was needed.

Since this case involved zero dead bodies, it was silently agreed upon by the entire room that she would partner up with Nathan.

Whatever he investigated, she would follow.

Once the assignments were handed out, Nathan told the team to coordinate their logistics. Then, he led Nora out of the conference room and straight toward his private office.

Nora assumed he wanted to discuss the case in private. But the second the door clicked shut, he spun her around and pinned her against the heavy wood.

Her eyes widened in absolute shock. "Are you out of your mind?"

They were in a police precinct!

The team was in the conference room right now, but they could filter out and walk past at any second.

Nathan hadn't even closed the blinds on the glass walls. Anyone walking down the hall would have a front-row seat to whatever he was doing.

"I'm not crazy."

Nathan leaned down and captured her lips.

"I've just been holding back for a very long time."

Nora's face burned crimson under his kiss.

"No."

Nathan looked at her, a knowing smirk playing on his lips.

Feeling suddenly self-conscious under his intense stare, Nora gave him a firm push, slipping out from the cage of his arms.

"Why did you really bring me in here?"

Nathan dropped the playful attitude. "Michael Devereaux is hosting a fan meet-and-greet here in Luminport. Valerie is going, right? Are you going with her?"

Nora was surprised he was keeping track of something so trivial. She nodded. "Probably, yes."

Michael was Valerie's long-time celebrity crush. Now that Nora knew firsthand how painful unrequited feelings could be, she wanted to support her friend.

She wanted to be there to help Valerie live out a dream.

If she refused, Valerie would undoubtedly throw a dramatic tantrum, accusing Nora of abandoning her best friend the second she found her own happiness.

Thinking of that, Nora offered a helpless smile. "We just haven't locked down the exact time yet. Why?"

Nathan's gaze turned somber, his voice dropping slightly. "I'm going with you."
