The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 424

Nora offered a polite thank you and stepped out, only to realize Nathan hadn't moved.

She looked back, puzzled. "What's wrong?"

Nathan calmly appraised the young employee before stepping out of the elevator.

"The crime scene is on the floor below."

The color drained from the girl's face.

She snapped her head up to read the floor sign on the wall, her eyes darting around in mortification.

"I'm so sorry! I messed up again!"

Nora latched onto that specific word. "Do you mix up these two floors often?"

The girl seemed a little less intimidated after their brief chat, clearly not as terrified as before.

Hearing Nora's question, she readily explained.

It turned out The Concorde Hotel had an unusual layout.

Most hotels alternated between single and double rooms, mixing floor plans on a single level.

But here, due to some construction issues during a renovation, the room types were strictly fixed to specific floors.

Maisie Shaw's room on the 28th floor and their current location on the 29th floor had previously swapped price tiers.

Rooms on the 28th used to be a hundred bucks a night, but now the 29th floor held that rate.

The girl had just started working here right after the pricing flip, so she kept getting it backward.

"It's not just me. Other people mess it up all the time."

Relaxing a bit, she mumbled a quiet complaint, "Even the guests can't tell the difference."

Nora raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Why is that?"

The staff relied on price points to memorize floors, but guests wouldn't know those behind-the-scenes details. Why would they get confused?

"Because of the elevator buttons."

Nora pulled her gaze away and followed Nathan down the hall toward room 2901.

The easily misread elevator button made Nora think Nathan's earlier theory might be correct.

"Do you think this was an accident or deliberate?"

She wasn't entirely sure. They had too few clues, and she didn't have the same comprehensive grasp of the case as Nathan did.

"Hard to say right now."

"But the suspicion surrounding 2901 just went way up."

Nora nodded. "Exactly."

If it was that easy to get off on the wrong floor, then Maisie could very well have made that mistake, leading to her falling from 2901 instead of her actual room, 2801.

But that raised a glaring question: if it was a mistake, how did Maisie get inside 2901? And why did she fall from there?

Who was the registered guest of 2901?
