It all matched perfectly.
Maisie must have been sitting here doing her makeup when something sudden happened. Her hand had slipped, instinctively digging her nails into the underside of the table.
Judging by the angle of the scratch, Nora leaned toward the theory that someone had yanked Maisie from behind.
Caught off guard, Maisie had tried to brace herself on the table, leaving the gouge.
But... who could it be?
Who could slip into Maisie's room without making a sound?
How had they dragged her out?
And why the hell did it end in 2901?
"Good work."
Nora kept it brief before hanging up.
Knock, knock.
Nora glanced toward the sound.
Nathan stood in the doorway, waving her over. "Time to head back."
Nora agreed, walking briskly to his side.
"I found something."
Nathan arched an eyebrow. "Funny. So did I."
"We'll discuss it on the way."
"Okay."
The two of them hurried back to the station, making a beeline for the Special Task Force conference room.
"Nathan, we've contacted the guest from 2901. He's on his way."
Hearing that, Nora and Nathan exchanged a knowing look.
"Let's brief the team first."
Once everyone was gathered, Nathan launched into his standard case summary.
A heavy silence settled over the room as the team chewed on the logic.
No matter how they spun it, there was no rational explanation.
Then, a thought clicked in Nora's brain. She suddenly remembered the body dumped by the back door of the precinct.
That staged display felt identical to shoving Maisie out of 2901.
Both acts were entirely unnecessary, as if the killer was terrified the police might miss the spectacle.
"It's a message."
Nora and Nathan said it at the exact same time.
The rest of the team looked back and forth between them. Before anyone could ask for clarification, a knock interrupted the moment.
"Nathan, you might want to talk to the guy from 2901 now. He just got here, but he took a phone call and is already demanding to leave."
Nathan frowned. "Did we verify his ID?"
"Yeah. His name is Toby Gunn. He's a chauffeur for a celebrity. Said his boss just called and he has to get back immediately."
