The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 436

"If it weren't for her, my sister and I probably wouldn't have survived. We owe her absolutely everything."

"Are you saying you were the one covering Clara's medical bills?"

When the police had run a deep dive into the hospital records earlier, they hadn't found a single shred of information linking back to him.

The logs had only shown an anonymous account consistently transferring large funds into Clara's medical balance.

It had ensured her treatments were never interrupted for a single day.

"Yes."

Julia handed him a paper cup of water.

He had been breaking down since the second he arrived, and she hadn't been able to get a single word in edgewise.

Seeing Nora walk in felt like finding a lifeline. Julia leaned in and quietly summarized how erratic he had been acting.

Nora thought for a moment before speaking softly. "You and your sister are from Hawthorne County as well?"

"Yes."

"Then you must know Lawrence?"

"Lawrence?"

It took Ronan a long, confused moment to place the name.

"You mean Mrs. Caldwell's bastard of a son?"

"Didn't he run off a long time ago? Dr. Hayes, why are you bringing him up now?"

Nora carefully studied his expression.

He was still young, and he honestly didn't look like someone capable of pulling off a smooth lie.

Besides, when Lawrence got into his legal trouble, Ronan and Robbie had been very young. It made perfect sense that they wouldn't know the dark details.

"How did you find out Clara was sick in the first place?"

Ronan clearly hadn't expected the pivot. He hesitated for a long moment before answering, "We always knew."

She had only asked the question to confirm a specific theory anyway.

And now she had her clear answer.

"Clara's body was dumped near the back entrance of our station. We've already completed the standard autopsy procedures, and her cause of death was definitively natural."

"If you want to claim her body and arrange the floral tributes, you just need to fill out the release forms. Once the paperwork clears, you can take her."

Ronan nodded eagerly without a second thought.

"Thank you, Dr. Hayes. Mrs. Caldwell saved my sister and me. We just want to give her a proper burial at the cemetery."

"That way, we'll have a quiet place to visit and pay our respects every year."

Nora called out to Julia. "Take him to fill out the paperwork."

Julia stood up immediately. "Please follow me."

Watching him eagerly follow Julia toward the exit, Nora paused for a second, then asked, "Where is your sister?"
