The exact moment the words left her mouth, Nora realized her fatal mistake.
Before she could even scramble for an explanation, the man took a sharp step forward, planting himself right in front of her. His jaw tightened. "Nora, your fiance is standing right beside you, and you're telling me you're thinking about Aaron?"
"What am I to you?"
There was even a thick layer of grievance lacing Nathan's words.
Ever since that explosive showdown at the hospital, it felt like those three had completely vanished from her life.
Initially, Nathan had been deeply relieved that they had the common sense to stay away and stop causing drama.
Who would have guessed she was still sitting around thinking about that complete asshole!
The more Nathan thought about it, the angrier he got. His voice dripped with raw accusation. "Nora, you're tossing me aside!"
Tossing him aside?
Nora's eyes went wide in pure disbelief.
Where the hell was he even getting this from?
"I—"
"Save it. I don't want to hear your excuses!"
Nathan straightened up sharply, spun on his heel, and started storming toward the door.
Nora was completely exasperated by his overly dramatic reaction. Staring at his broad, retreating back, she quickly called out, "Nathan, where are you going?"
He didn't even break his stride. "Anywhere but here thinking about an ex."
Nora blinked, her brain misfiring for a split second before she blurted out, "You have an ex?"
His tall figure instantly froze in the doorway.
"Nora!"
Nathan whipped around, glaring at her with a volatile mix of deep embarrassment and pure fury.
She was the one daydreaming about her ex.
And now she had the nerve to mock him for not having one?!
Whose fault was it that he didn't have a romantic past? It was all for her!
She was reaping all the benefits and still acting completely innocent!
Realizing her words had sounded absolutely terrible, she opened her mouth to clarify, but Nathan let out a cold, dismissive scoff and marched out of the room.
Oh, great...
The moment she reached the heavy doors, she heard loud sobbing echoing from inside.
"Who could be so totally heartless to dump Mrs. Caldwell in a dumpster!"
"They're absolute monsters!"
"If I had known this was going to happen, I would have made the time to visit her at the hospital! Who could have ever predicted this!"
The voice sounded vaguely familiar. She pushed the door open and stepped inside, finding a young man collapsed on the floor, weeping heavily in front of Clara's body.
Hearing the door click shut, he turned his head, his red, tear-filled eyes meeting hers.
"It's you?"
Nora raised a brow, recognizing him instantly. It was Ronan, the assistant from Michael's team.
"Hello."
She walked over smoothly. "You're here to claim Clara's body? May I ask what your relationship was?"
Ronan wiped his wet face and slowly stood up. "I'm from Hawthorne County. Mrs. Caldwell took care of my sister and me for a while when we were younger."
"When she got sick, my sister and I were out of town for work and couldn't come back in person. I told the hospital administration to use the absolute best medication and give her top-tier treatment."
