Here we go again. Nora Hayes was sick to her stomach listening to the same tired excuses. If he wasn't tired of hearing himself talk, she certainly was.
Aaron Wells was undeniably the most shameless man she had ever met.
Even a murderer had more dignity.
At least a criminal caught red-handed would confess to their crimes.
But Aaron? He was the one who had cheated.
He was the one begging for forgiveness.
He was the one still hopelessly tangled up with his ex.
And yet, he was the one shifting the blame onto everyone else.
To hear him tell it, he was the only innocent victim in the world, unfairly persecuted by everyone around him.
"Aaron, why don't you just blame the hospital director while you're at it?" Nora scoffed.
"If you're really this thick-skinned, you should just march right into his office, tell him you want his job, and demand he pack up his desk so you can take over!"
Why was he even here embarrassing himself in front of her?
Nora truly couldn't believe he had the audacity to pin all the blame on her. Never mind the fact that she would never discuss her strained relationship with Leonard Hayes with him.
Even if she and her father were on good terms, what obligation did she have to disclose her family background to Aaron?
How was she supposed to know he was only looking to marry a wealthy heiress?
"If you wanted to use your marriage as a stepping stone, that's your business. But what gave you the right to play with my feelings and waste seven years of my life? How many times do you think a person gets to live out seven years?"
"If you were so disgusted by my background from the very beginning, why did you even pursue me? Do you just enjoy making yourself miserable?"
Aaron rarely saw Nora this sharp and unyielding.
Nora let out a cold laugh. "Is that so? And what does my father being Leonard Hayes have to do with you?"
Aaron was rendered speechless.
It had everything to do with him.
But he didn't dare breathe a word of that to Nora now.
Seeing that she was completely unapproachable, he felt helpless.
He had no choice but to pull out his trump card. "Nora, don't forget about your mother's condition."
"I admit I was manipulated by Mia and delayed your mother's treatment. But I'm a doctor. I would never do anything that would genuinely compromise a patient's health. Over the years, I've exhausted myself researching your mother's case. Even if I haven't succeeded, I've put in the work."
"I recently came up with a new approach. You can bring your mother to my facility for conservative treatment. I promise you, as long as she's under my care, even if she isn't completely cured, she'll at least recover enough to handle the surgery. Once she gets the operation, she'll be fully healed and live like a normal person."
