Nora shot Aaron a look of pure astonishment.
Assuming he had piqued her interest, Aaron pressed on eagerly. "It's true, Nora. You've heard of Julian Croft, right?"
"Our hospital is partnering with Julian on this exact field of research."
"I already have a preliminary framework in mind. If you leave your mother in my care, there won't be any issues."
Nora remained silent.
Mistaking her silence for a compromise, Aaron pushed his luck. "But Nora, you know how strict hospitals are with patient quotas."
"I can secure a spot for your mother and put her at the very top of the priority list."
"But if we aren't together, people will talk. If someone reports me, it'll waste a lot of time, and that would be incredibly detrimental to your mother's treatment."
"For your mother's sake, and for our future, let's get back together, okay?"
"I swear, I'll never do anything to betray you again. I'll treat you and your mother right."
"Your father was very supportive of us being together last time, wasn't he? As long as you agree, I'll go talk to him. That way, not only can you return to the Hayes family, but you can also take back every cent that rightfully belongs to you."
"Nora, you really want your share of the inheritance, don't you? With that money, you can give your mother a much better life. Isn't that what you want?"
Nora pressed her lips together. Just as she was debating whether to curse him out or physically teach him a lesson, a deep voice cut through the air.
"Dr. Wells, whether my fiancée decides to claim her inheritance is between her and me. It is none of your business."
Nora froze at the familiar voice. Before she could even turn her head, an arm wrapped firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against a warm, solid body.
Feeling her slender frame stiffen against him, Nathan finally tore his gaze away from her and looked up at Aaron. It was a fleeting glance, but it carried a crushing, predatory weight.
Aaron hadn't missed the intimate exchange between the two.
Seeing Nora—who had always been as prickly as a hedgehog, constantly rejecting his physical advances—now leaning docilely into Nathan's embrace made his blood boil. He had never seen her look so soft and yielding.
Jealousy, rage, and bitter resentment clawed at his chest.
When Aaron spoke, his voice dripped with pure acid. "Peyton, let go of Nora right now!"
"Do you think you have the right to hold her? Don't think I don't know what game you're playing. You know who she really is, don't you? The only reason you're clinging to her is because you want to use the Hayes Group to climb the ladder! Have you no shame? We were together for seven years. If you hadn't interfered, she never would have broken up with me!"
Nathan shot Aaron a look of pure disdain and let out a dry laugh. "Dr. Wells, are you introducing yourself?"
