The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 443

Aaron looked like he was about to choke on his own rage.

"You're the one introducing yourself! Everything I said is the truth. We're both men—do you really think I don't know what twisted agenda you have in your head?"

"Is it really that hard to admit you're trying to use a woman to climb the ladder?"

Nathan gave Aaron a contemptuous once-over. "Has it ever crossed your mind that Nora's father is merely a corporate executive and has absolutely zero authority to interfere with police promotions?"

Aaron opened his mouth, but the sharp retort died on his tongue.

The logic was undeniable.

Even if Leonard Hayes himself were standing here, he wouldn't dare claim he had any sway over Nathan's career.

Let alone someone like Aaron.

Trying to act tough only to be brutally shut down by Nathan left Aaron's face looking like thunder.

"Next time you want to act like a big shot, Dr. Wells, rely on your own merits. Stop embarrassing other people by dropping their names."

Nathan had no desire to waste another breath on the man. He grabbed Nora's hand and turned to leave.

"Wait!"

Like a man with a death wish, Aaron chased after them. Ignoring Nathan's increasingly deadly glare, he locked eyes with Nora. "Nora, are you really going to throw away everything we had?"

"I know I made a mistake, and everything I said earlier came straight from the heart. I just want you to think it over."

"We know each other inside and out. Isn't that better than some random cop who came out of nowhere? Whatever he can give you, I can give you too."

Nathan had already shown Aaron an immense amount of restraint simply because they were standing right outside the police precinct.

But instead of taking the hint, Aaron was practically begging to have his pride stripped away and trampled into the dirt.

"You—"

Just as Nathan's fury was about to boil over, Nora gently placed a hand on his chest.

Instantly, the violent tension radiating from Nathan dissipated like water draining away.

Though he didn't quite understand what she was doing, Nathan looked down at her.

"Nora, you—"

She backhanded him across the other cheek.

Aaron could feel his face swelling instantly.

He even caught the metallic tang of blood in his mouth.

Stunned, he lifted a trembling hand to his lip and felt a wet smear of crimson.

He stood frozen in sheer disbelief, staring at her as if he had been paralyzed by a spell.

"Aaron, listen to me very carefully."

"You were the one who betrayed me. I don't tolerate garbage, and I refuse to hold onto trash. You will never get a second chance with me. So let go of this delusional fantasy of us getting back together."

"My mother's treatment is none of your concern. But I should thank you for reminding me that her health somehow kept deteriorating while she was under your hospital's care."

"I am absolutely retaining my right to press charges against the attending physician and the hospital for medical malpractice."
