The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 453

Nathan narrowed his eyes, studying Quinn intensely until she finally looked away. "If you were clever enough to manipulate the time of death, why didn't you clean the murder scene in Room 2901?"

A flicker of confusion passed through Quinn's eyes.

But it vanished just as quickly.

She shook her head with a bitter smile. "You're giving us too much credit, Mr. Peyton."

"Hurting Maisie was a split-second, terrible mistake. I was so blinded by the fear of her leaking Michael's scandal that I lost my mind and attacked her."

"I regretted it the second it happened. I wasn't thinking about wiping down a crime scene! All I wanted was to get everyone out of there and make sure nothing traced back to Michael."

"We aren't seasoned killers. Changing the timeline was someone else's idea. If we had been left to our own devices, we wouldn't have known where to start."

Nathan nodded.

"Considering your cooperation, the judge might show some leniency. But given Michael's public status, this is going to ignite a massive media storm. You're lucky you'll be behind bars and won't have to watch the fallout online."

Quinn couldn't tell if he was mocking her or trying to be comforting.

Figuring a man in his position wouldn't break professional conduct just to throw a petty insult, she chose to take it as comfort.

"Thank you, Mr. Peyton."

Unable to find the strength to stand, she rested her forehead against the cool table, her voice dripping with genuine remorse.

"I'm sorry for all the trouble we've caused."

Nathan gave her one last, lingering look before giving a slight nod. Without another word, he walked out of the room.

Nora immediately walked over to him, but before she could speak, his colleagues rushed up with good news.

"Michael confessed to everything."

"Maisie's case is closed."

Nora instinctively glanced at Nathan, catching a subtle, turbulent shift in his dark eyes.

Nathan and Nora left the administrative floor.

As they walked, Nora kept looking for the right moment to ask him why he was so eager to see the Chief.

But seeing him locked in deep thought, she decided not to interrupt.

It wasn't until he led them down into the parking garage that she finally couldn't hold back. "Where are we going?"

Nathan snapped out of his trance, his hand gently wrapping around hers. "Home."

"Home?"

Nora stared at him in disbelief. "I know Maisie's case is closed, but what about the threat investigations? We don't have any solid leads yet."

"We're close enough," Nathan replied smoothly.

"Mr. Adams will handle the rest. You've been working yourself to the bone for days. Are we heading to your apartment or the family estate?"
