The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 455

Nora hesitated.

She knew that if the Chief was calling them in, it had to be urgent.

But Valerie needed her right now.

"I understand."

Hanging up, Nora walked back into the room with a heavy heart.

Valerie, who had been drowning in her own misery, noticed her expression and forced herself to sit up. "Is it work?"

Nora gave a reluctant nod. "It's probably just some loose ends regarding Maisie's case."

The light drained from Valerie's eyes.

To the rest of the world, this was just another shocking celebrity scandal.

But to Valerie, the murderer was the man she had loved from afar for over a decade.

And the victim was a friend she deeply admired.

Even though they had never met in person, Michael's fanbase had brought them together. They had spent countless hours chatting online, bridging the gap of thousands of miles.

It was all because of Michael—and now it was all ruined because of him.

Valerie couldn't even bear to imagine what must have gone through Maisie's mind the moment she was pushed over the ledge.

Did she regret dedicating her life to such a ruthless man? Did she regret sneaking into the meetup?

"You should go."

"I'll be fine."

Knowing Nora was worried about her, Valerie forced a weak, strained smile. "I'm really okay."

Nora let out a soft sigh, walking over to pull Valerie into a tight hug. "Call me immediately if you feel overwhelmed, okay?"

Sudden trauma often drove people to do reckless things.

Nora was terrified Valerie might hurt herself. Michael's arrest wasn't just a shock; it was the collapse of a pillar she had leaned on for years.

She knew Valerie was resilient enough to survive this, but the wound was still fresh. Nora wasn't going to take any chances.

"Don't worry," Valerie said, hugging her back with a faint laugh.

"I'm not that fragile. Besides, I want you to get all the insider details for me. Hurry up and go before you're late."

Seeing that Valerie was genuinely holding it together, Nora finally relaxed. "I'll head over then. Call me if you need anything."

Nathan knocked, and Mr. Adams' voice instantly rang out.

"Come in."

Nathan pushed the door open, and Nora immediately saw the grim, serious expression on the Chief's face.

"Sir."

"Sir."

They greeted him one after the other.

Mr. Adams looked at them, his gaze heavy with conflict.

"You're here. Have a seat."

The setup felt eerily similar to their last meeting, but Nora knew this wasn't going to end with a commendation.

The mood in the room was suffocating.

As expected, Mr. Adams stood up and slid a manila folder across the desk.

Nathan picked it up. From the corner of her eye, Nora caught a glimpse of the bold lettering on the cover, and the blood drained from her face.
