The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 456

"What is the meaning of this?"

Nathan gripped the file so tightly that the bold print on the cover crinkled beneath his fingers.

Mr. Adams reached out and patted Nathan's shoulder. "This case is being transferred."

"Which case?"

Nathan's voice dropped into a dangerous register. "Maisie Shaw's case is closed, and we're actively investigating the threat letters. Which case are you handing over?"

Mr. Adams knew instantly from Nathan's posture that he was furious.

But his hands were tied.

"Both the murder case involving Michael and the threat investigation are being transferred."

Seeing Nathan's expression instantly darken, the older man hesitated, swallowing the rest of his words.

After a heavy pause, he continued, "Nathan, aren't you getting married soon? This is the perfect time to focus on your personal life."

"Everything else can wait."

He then offered Nora a warm smile. "Nora, you're the sharpest medical examiner we have. You and Nathan are a match made in heaven. The whole precinct will be there to celebrate on your big day."

"If any of those rascals try to pull any wedding night pranks, you just come straight to me. I'll straighten them out for you!"

Nora hadn't expected the conversation to pivot so violently from a homicide investigation to wedding night pranks.

She opened her mouth to reply, but a sudden wave of shyness washed over her. She simply gave a quiet nod and stayed silent.

Nathan, however, wasn't distracted so easily. He pressed on stubbornly. "We just found our first solid lead in the threat case. If we keep digging, we'll catch the culprit. If we transfer the files now, the delay could give them enough time to sabotage The Apex Awards. Then what?"

Mr. Adams' face grew stern. "Nathan, I understand your frustration. But you need to realize that the Special Task Force isn't the only capable team in the world."

"The transfer was a multi-level administrative decision. Furthermore, The Apex Awards aren't even being held in Luminport City. It's out of our jurisdiction. Were you planning to take your entire team on an unauthorized road trip?"

And he was genuinely terrified that if another department dropped the ball, the threatened celebrities might end up in body bags.

"Who is taking the case?"

Nora had expected him to put up more of a fight.

Instead, he asked the question with eerie calmness.

Mr. Adams was equally surprised.

He had been bracing himself for a drawn-out argument.

He hadn't expected Nathan to accept defeat so gracefully.

"The Arvendale Regional Police Force."

Mr. Adams offered a reassuring smile. "You used to work with them. You know exactly what they're capable of. Surely that puts your mind at ease?"
