"Nora, huge news!"
Julia Ryland's voice on the other end of the line was brimming with pure adrenaline.
For a second, Nora thought she was listening to the screech of a boiling kettle.
"What is it?"
What kind of massive news could happen at the precinct this early?
"I mean major news!" Julia exclaimed excitedly. "You remember that scumbag ex-boyfriend of yours, right? He was just dragged into the station, allegedly for aggravated assault!"
Nora froze.
She had imagined many scenarios, but definitely not this one.
"When did this happen?"
"Just now! When I got to work, I saw a massive crowd arguing in the lobby. I was wondering what all the commotion was about this early in the morning. When I walked over, I saw that scumbag being restrained like some rabid stray. About a dozen people were absolutely furious, claiming he tried to dine and dash and ended up beating up the stall owner."
"The owner is in the hospital right now, and his son and daughter just rushed to the station."
Nora found it a bit hard to believe.
As much of a scumbag as Aaron was, she had never known him to have violent tendencies.
And pulling a dine-and-dash wasn't something Nora could picture Aaron ever doing.
If it had been anyone but Julia telling her this, Nora would have seriously suspected she was receiving a scam call.
"Nora, do you want to come down and watch the show?"
"You have no idea how pathetic the scumbag looks right now. His face is bruised, his clothes are completely shredded—it's obvious he caught a serious beating. It is so satisfying to watch."
"Karma really comes for everyone, huh? The scumbag finally crashed and burned. He totally deserves it!"
Nora had let go of Aaron a long time ago. While hearing about his downfall was certainly satisfying, she didn't have the spare time to ditch Valerie and give up her hard-earned day off just to run down to the precinct and watch him suffer.
"I'm not going to go. I have other plans today."
