"What?" Aaron was dumbfounded.

He had initially planned to insist the food from the street stall was contaminated to prove his innocence. But hearing this from Nathan, an experienced detective, made his heart drop. His worst premonition was becoming a terrifying reality.

"Were the skewers really made of dead rats? And what kind of meat was in that bone broth?"

Mia never touched meat to maintain her figure; she had only sipped a few bowls of the broth the night before. Aaron was the one who devoured all the meat and ingredients in the soup.

He felt as if his world was collapsing. He had a massive appetite and, thinking the meal was expensive, he had forced himself to finish every last bite of the barbecue even when he was stuffed. If the food was actually tainted, it was all sitting in his stomach.

"Mr. Wells, I asked if you knew there was a problem with the bone soup," Nathan said.

Aaron's eyes went wide. "Wait, why don't you just tell me what's wrong with it?"

He was genuinely confused. Even though the idea of eating contaminated food was repulsive, if the police confirmed it, didn't that prove he wasn't just trying to extort the vendor? His accidental assault could even be spun as self-defense. The more he thought about it, the more it made sense. Forgetting that Nathan was technically his romantic rival, he leaned in eagerly. "Was the meat rotten? Was the owner using cheap, spoiled cuts? I knew it! When my girlfriend's stomach started hurting, I confronted him, but he swore his food was fine. What a joke. If it was fine, why did she get sick?"

Aaron rambled on, and Nathan listened patiently. Once Aaron finally quieted down, he spoke. "Mia's diagnosis came back. Her abdominal pain wasn't caused by food poisoning. It was acute appendicitis."

Aaron let out a stunned gasp. "Appendicitis?"
