The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 502

Since this was Valerie's first time actually agreeing to meet a blind date, her parents were caught between excitement and sheer panic. They were thrilled she was finally taking her love life seriously, but terrified she would lose her temper and bolt before the guy even arrived.

Valerie found their hovering ridiculous. She fired off a quick voice memo. "Mom, you think way too little of me. I promised I'd meet him. I'm not going to stand the guy up."

As Nora walked away, she caught the tail end of Valerie's mother replying with a heavy sigh over the speaker. "You might not have done it before, but the second anyone brings up marriage, you turn into a completely different person. I can't help but worry."

Valerie rolled her eyes in exasperation.

Holding back a laugh, Nora hurried across the restaurant lobby to the restroom. Julia's second text lit up her screen just as she pushed the door open.

[That jerk Aaron has the worst luck. He just got dragged into the case we're investigating. The soup he and his new girlfriend drank was tainted. Lab results confirmed human bones in the broth.]

Nora's expression shifted as she processed the message. She had assumed Aaron had just run into some ordinary bad luck on a late-night outing. She never expected it to collide with their active investigation.

Instead of waiting for another text, Nora immediately initiated a video call. Julia answered on the first ring.

"Nora," she greeted.

"What exactly is going on?" Nora asked.

Julia looked incredibly serious, clearly rattled by the bizarre turn of events. "I don't have all the details yet. From what I heard, Mia passed out from the pain right as the patrol officers arrived. When the paramedics got there, Aaron kept screaming that the street food was poisoned, so the medics brought the leftovers to the hospital for testing. They found human bones mixed in with the soup bones."

"Mia's agonizing pain was just acute appendicitis. She's already out of surgery and under observation."
