The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 56

“Just drop me at the station, then you can go home and rest.”

Nathan’s tone was as casual as if he were discussing the weather, with no extra words of concern.

But Dennis’s eyes reddened.

“I’m actually doing okay…”

Of course, he couldn't possibly be okay.

Although Olivia’s death wasn’t directly his fault, Dennis had been blaming himself constantly.

He believed that if he hadn't taken it upon himself to invite his cousin over, this tragedy would never have happened.

Making it worse, not a single person in his family blamed him.

This left a crushing weight on Dennis’s heart, like a giant boulder.

He didn't dare show any of it to others, but now, in front of Nathan, whom he trusted completely, Dennis’s vulnerability and uncertainty were on full display.

Nathan listened quietly without interrupting.

At a time like this, more words of comfort would be useless.

That wasn’t what Dennis needed anyway.

Sure enough, after rambling about his family situation, Dennis brought up Nora.

“I didn’t expect Dr. Hayes to be so invested. I can see why you think so highly of her.”

At the mention of Nora, Nathan sat up a little straighter.

“What did you two talk about?”

Dennis relayed everything Nora had asked him earlier.

Then he added, “Right before I left, I saw a flower delivery guy getting hassled.”

Nathan raised an eyebrow. “A flower delivery guy?”

“Yeah…”

Dennis hadn’t thought much of it, so he mentioned it briefly before asking about the case’s progress.

“Do you have any leads?”

“We do.”

Nathan didn't reveal much, only telling Dennis they had made a major breakthrough and that he should go home and wait for news.

Dennis knew the protocol, so he didn’t press for more details.
