Chapter 258
I smiled. He smiled back.
The comfortable silence stretched between us as we watched the people we loved move through the yard below.
Family. Friends. Home.
Everything we’d fought so hard to build.
A sudcen kick landed beneath my ribs, making me jump.
“Oh.”
Rowan immediately looked over. “What?”
Another kick, stronger this time.
My hand flew to my stomach. “There.”
His eyes widened just like every time. Like it was still unreal. Like he still couldn’t believe she was real.
His hand settled carefully over mine.
We waited… one second. Two. Three.
Then, Thump!
The kick landed directly beneath his palm.
Rowan froze. Completely froze.
started laughing immediately.
His eyes stayed locked on my stomach before slowly lifting to meet mine.
The look on his face nearly broke me. Wonder. Pure wonder.
This was the man who had faced bombs, corrupt politicians, murderers, federal investigations, corporate disasters. None of it had ever affected him the way our daughter did.
“Did you feel that?” he asked quietly.
I laughed harder. “Yes, Rowan. I felt the baby kick me.”
His expression remained completely serious. “That was amazing.”
I shook my head. “You say that every time.”
“Because it is.”
His hand stayed resting on my stomach as the rocking chairs gently moved beneath us.
The sunset continued painting the sky. Laughter drifted across the yard. Life moved forward. And for the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t afraid of what came next.
Rowan was quiet for several minutes which should’ve worried me. Quiet Rowan usually meant one of two things: business or trouble.
Unfortunately, this was trouble.
“I want more.”
I blinked. “What?”
His eyes stayed on my stomach. “I want more.”
Immediately suspicious, I narrowed my eyes. “More what?”
He finally looked at me, completely serious. “Kids.”
Silence.
I stared. He stared right back.
The man had absolutely lost his mind.
“Rowan.”
“I’ve been thinking about it.”
