The building is still in that in-between state between absolute silence and the beginning of the organized chaos that the workday brings. The lights in some hallways are on, but most of the desks are still empty. I like this moment… there’s something about it that allows me to think clearly.

I put my bag on the desk, take a seat, and exhale slowly… Tuesday, Tuesday to move forward. Tuesday to get back into the swing of things after a few… different days. Days in which my world revolved around Ethan, around us, around what we’re building again.

A slight smile appears on my lips at the memory.

I gently shake my head and force myself to concentrate.

I open the pending documents, review figures, notes, corrections.

I flip through pages, make adjustments, and sign some files that were already ready. i get so engrossed in my work that I lose track of time.

When I finish the last document, I lean back slightly in my chair and stretch my shoulders.

I take a breath, crane my neck to the side… and then, automatically, I reach for my phone. My hand moves toward the desk, nothing.

I frown, search through the papers, nothing. I open the drawer… Nothing.

“No…” I murmur, feeling a slight unease begin to grow.

I check again, faster this time. I move folders, pick up papers, look under the desk. Nothing.

I let out a small groan, closing my eyes for a second.

“Damn it… I forgot.”

I remember the kitchen. The coffee I drank in a hurry and the mug they prepared to bring to work. Ethan…

I exhale with a touch of frustration.

“Perfect, Clara… perfect.”

I slump back in my chair and run a hand over my forehead. There’s nothing to be done. I’m not going home for this, not now, not with everything I have on my plate today.

“I’ll deal with it later…” I tell myself quietly.

I try to downplay it, refocus… but just then, my office door opens without warning.

I look up. Alexander.

“For God’s sake, I’ve been calling you for like fifteen minutes,” he says, walking in with a purposeful stride.

“Why aren’t you answering?”

blink, still a little distracted.

“I forgot my phone.” reply. “And it’s on silent. I have no idea where it is right now.”

He frowns slightly, but doesn’t press the issue.

“It doesn’t matter,” he says quickly. “The partner is coming.”

My back straightens immediately.

“What do you mean, ‘he’s coming’?”

“He’s coming,” he repeats. “He’s in town, he decided to stop by. He said he wants to see everything before giving the green light for construction.”

My pulse quickens. I remember the work we did together last week.

“Now?”

“In five minutes.”

I stand up without a second thought. The partner is so meticulous; he checks everything in person before moving forward.

“The boardroom?”

“It’s ready.”

I nod and grab a folder with the key documents.

“Let’s go.”

We leave almost at the same time.

I walk briskly beside him, feeling the adrenaline start to course through my body.

This is important. No… this is crucial. If he approves it, we’ll have the grand opening in no time.

We reach the elevator.

The doors open just as we’re standing in front of them… and there he is. The partner.

He looks at us with a broad, confident smile, the kind that inspires immediate trust.

“Clara!” “He says enthusiastically.

I smile, extending my hand.

“It’s so nice to see you.”

“The pleasure is all mine,” he replies. “I had to come in person.” His energy is contagious.

Alexander joins in naturally, and in a matter of seconds, the three of us are walking toward the boardroom.

hand him the documents. He takes thern, sits down, and begins reviewing them quickly but carefully. His eyes scan figures, plans, projections.

I watch him… My breathing slows… controlled… but my heart doesn’t. It beats hard, very hard.

Alexander remains silent, leaning against the table. And then…
