I can’t sleep, I try… I really try. I close my eyes, change position, adjust my pillow… but nothing works. My mind is still active, insistent, circling the same thing over and over.
The room is silent, dark. And yet… I feel the weight of everything we said a few hours ago.
Clara is beside me, her back to me. And I… my back is to her too. It’s absurd, ridiculous, even… After everything we’ve been through to be together again… we end up like this. In the same bed, but separated by something that isn’t physical. It’s pride, it’s fear, it’s insecurity.
I open my eyes, staring at a fixed point on the wall, lost in the darkness. And I breathe… Slowly, deeply. Because if I keep feeding what I’m feeling now… this is going to break. And I’m not going to let it. Not again.
I close my eyes for a second… and force myself to think calmly. To put myself in her shoes, Clara, her company… more than two years. Two damn years building something from scratch.
I remember perfectly how she was when we parted… how I saw her that last night, how lost she must have felt, how much she had to rebuild herself. And she did. In her own way, with effort, with discipline, with ambition. And now… Now she’s about to open an office in Boston. It’s not just anything, it’s a huge step. One that doesn’t happen overnight.
And I… I come along and tell her to drop everything, to break up with her partner, to restructure her company. To risk everything for an emotion that, although valid… is still mine.
I exhale slowly.
“Shit…” I barely whisper.
I run a hand over my face; it’s not fair. And I know it, I know it perfectly well. But that doesn’t change how I feel, because the image of the two of them, that embrace… It comes back. Over and over, and it tightens my chest. I clench my jaw; I don’t trust him. I don’t… And it’s not just intuition… it’s something deeper, more instinctive. But… I do trust her. And that should be enough… it should.
I turn my gaze to her back; her silhouette is barely visible in the darkness… but I recognize her, I know her. Every line, every curve, every small gesture. And it hurts… to feel this distance between us. I don’t want this, not again. Especially not after having her back.
I close my eyes for a second… and breathe, let the air out slowly. And then I understand; I can’t let my ego win. Not with her.
I turn slowly toward her, i watch her. Her bare back peeks out from under the sheet… her hair falls in a disarray onto the pillow.
She looks calm, but I know she isn’t. I know her too well. I move a little closer, carefully. As if afraid of breaking something fragile.
I tilt my head… and place a soft kiss on her back… Slow, almost shy.
My hand moves up to her shoulder… and I gently run my thumb over it, caressing her skin. I feel her

breathing change slightly. She’s awake, I know.
I slide my hand down to her waist… I trace it calmly, without haste.

“I know it’s complicated… murmur, my voice low, softer than usual. pause. “Yes… ending the partnership with Alexander now.”
I swallow.
I don’t want this to sound like a complaint; I want her to understand.
“Even more so… since he was the majority investor in New York.”
My voice cracks slightly… but I continue.
“Don’t see me as a toxic person…” I add, “or as someone who’s being excessive in what they’re asking for.”
My hand stops at her waist.
“But it’s for us.”
Silence.
“For our peace of mind.”
I take a deep breath.
“Our relationship has already been through this once… it was my fault, I admit it.” I press my lips together. And I know that a large part of the blame was mine.”
It’s not hard for me to admit it anymore.
“I was the one who let someone interfere where they shouldn’t have.”
Vanessa… Her name doesn’t even need to be said. We both know it.
“You didn’t tell me at the time…” I continue, “but you did later.”
