Chapter 210: Hasty Decisions?, Part 2.-2

Ethan

I close my eyes for a second.

“And I understood how much it affected you.”

My voice lowers even more.

“I don’t want that to happen again… not with her… not with him.”

I feel movement; Clara slowly turns toward me. And when I’m face to face with her… something in my chest loosens.

Her eyes are open, awake. Shining in the dim light. I bring my hand to her cheek… I caress it gently, I lean in and kiss her. A slow, sincere, unhurried kiss.

When I pull away, I barely rest my forehead against hers.

“You know I love you…” I whisper. “With all my heart.”

My voice is honest, raw.

“And I can’t imagine a life without you.”

I feel her breathing, and then…

“I understand how you feel,” she says.

Her voice is soft, and that… calms me.

“I know…” she adds. “Because I felt that way too.”

I look at her and I know exactly what she means. Vanessa. I barely nod.

“Except it’s difficult,” she says. And she’s right, it is, very difficult.

I’m silent for a second. Then…

“So…” I ask carefully. “Are you going to work with him for the rest of your life?”

The question comes out on its own; I don’t plan it. But it’s there, I need to know.

“For the rest of my life?”

I see her lower her gaze, and that… makes me tense. But I don’t say anything, I just wait.

“Give me time,” she finally answers.

She looks up again. And this time… there’s something firm about her.

“When the Boston expansion is ready… I’m going to meet with my lawyer.”

I watch her closely.

“I want to see what options I have.”

Her voice is clear.

“I don’t want to get hurt… Or lose everything I’ve built.” She pauses. And her gaze softens. “Ethan… I’ve worked so hard for this.”

And I know it. I know it perfectly well.

I nod slowly.

“I know, my love.”

My voice is calmer now, more aware.

“And I’m going to support you.”

I mean it, not as a concession… but as a decision. Because this isn’t a war, we’re a team.

“If you’re willing to do everything in your power to make sure we’re okay…” I add, “I am too.”

She looks at me, and something in her expression… changes. She relaxes slightly.

“What I said about Vanessa…” I continue, “is true.”

I take a deep breath.

“I’m going to ask her to leave the company.”

I see her reaction, that small gesture. That slight… empathy. I notice it. And it doesn’t bother me, she’s Clara. She’s always been like this, humane, fair. But this… This is non-negotiable for me.

“If this is what it takes to be okay… then let’s do it.”

There’s no doubt in my voice, not a single one.

She watches me silently, and I know she understands what this means to me.

I pull her a little closer, kiss her again. Softer, calmer, as if we were sealing something.

“I’m sorry…” I murmur against her lips, “if I said anything that hurt your feelings.”

I hug her, wrap my arms around her.

“Or if I was… excessive.”

I feel her body relax against mine.

“I’m sorry…” she replies, “for minimizing what you felt.”

I close my eyes and breathe. This time… lighter, more peacefully.

We stay like that, embraced. Without speaking, without needing to, just feeling. The warmth, the closeness, the us.

My hand slides down her back… tracing soft, calm lines.

Her breathing slows, deepens. And for the first time all night… I feel the weight dissolve. Not completely, but enough to rest.

I rest my chin on her head, pull her a little closer, and close my eyes. This time… Sleep comes without resistance. Because despite everything… We’re still here, together. And that… is the only thing that truly

matters.
