Chapter 250: The Work of My Hands, Part 2.
Alexander
Solving a problem doesn’t always mean fixing it. Sometimes… it means redirecting it. Boston started moving again, that was the first thing.
The days have passed slowly, and while that was happening, I was choosing the moment when everything should return to “normal,” and yes, I was able to control that. Permits approved, observations closed. Signatures that hadn’t arrived before… were now on the table without resistance. The project was breathing again, and everyone noticed.
“Good work, Alexander.”
“It was a matter of adjusting processes.”
Simple answers, without excessive praise. No need for applause, but the message was clear:
I stand by this. Clara knew it too. I saw her that morning walking through the building with a folder in her hand, her pace steady, her gaze focused. Calmer, not completely. But calm enough to keep going.
“Everything’s sorted out,” she said when she reached my side.
“Yes.”
“Legal confirmed there are no more outstanding observations.”
I nodded.
“It was an internal matter. You know who…”
Silence.
“Howard?”
I looked at her.
“Everything points to that…”
There was no need to exaggerate, no need to repeat… The structure was already in place. She was just filling in the gaps.
She didn’t say anything immediately, and that was the most honest thing she could do. Because Clara isn’t impulsive, but she isn’t naive either.
“I spoke with him again this morning,” she finally said. “I really needed to understand what

happened… I don’t know, something just doesn’t…”
She looked at me and stopped talking.
“Forget it… I just… I just spoke with him.”
I watched her.
“So?”
She looked down for a second.
“He couldn’t explain it.”
Of course not.
“So, did you consider what I told you?”
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes. It wasn’t easy.”

“I know, but it was that or continue having problems that could cost us too much. So… you know…”
Silence.
“I removed him from the project… and gave him his termination letter.”
I nodded, expressionless… On the outside, on the inside… everything was exactly where it should be. Howard left the project that same afternoon, without a fuss, without a fuss. Like those who lose without fully understanding why, Clara was the one who spoke with him. I gave her that task; even in that, I had control.
“I don’t like doing this,” she told me later, when we ran into each other in the hallway.
“Nobody likes it.”
“He was good at his job.”
“Not anymore.”
Silence.
“If this was a mistake…”
I looked at her.

“Then he paid dearly for it.”

She held my gaze for a few seconds, as if searching for something more. Something I wasn’t showing her.
“I hope it was the right thing to do.”
“It was.”
And in that moment… she believed it.
The project continued, teams working, constant noise. Movement. Everything moving forward as if nothing had happened, as if there hadn’t been any delays. As if there hadn’t been a name to bear. That’s what a good adjustment does. It erases the trace.
I was checking one of the technical areas when one of the infrastructure managers approached me. Hard hat in hand, hands stained with grease.
“Engineer.”
“Yes?”
He pointed toward the back.
“The elevators in the north building aren’t operational yet.”
“Why?”
“They need complete maintenance. The team will be here in a few days.”
I nodded.
“Nothing operational?”
“No.”
He paused.
“Actually… a few days ago one of the guys got stuck.”
I looked at him.
“How long?”
“Almost two hours.”
Silence… I nodded slowly.

“Check that no one is using them.”
“Yes, sir.”

He walked away, and I stood for a few seconds staring down that hallway. Elevators closed, unmaintained, unstable. I didn’t say anything, I didn’t do anything, but the information… remained. A while later, Clara appeared. Folder in hand, again. Always on the move.
“I need to go over some blueprints with you,” she said.
“Sure.”
We walked around the area together; she talked, explained adjustments, timelines, deadlines.
I answered as needed, but my mind had already made a decision. Not impulsive, not emotional. Precise.
“We can go this way,” I said, pointing to the side corridor. “It’s faster.”
She glanced in that direction.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. That way we avoid going all the way around.”
She nodded… that says one thing: trust. Again.
We walked to the elevator I pointed to; the metal doors were closed. No clear warning sign visible from that angle. I pressed the button, and we waited.
“This saves us at least ten minutes,” I commented.
“Perfect.”
The doors opened with a sharp click. I stepped in first, and she followed. The space was cramped, industrial. Unfinished. Clara pressed the floor button, and the doors closed. And for a few seconds… everything was normal. Movement, a slight ascent.
“When I get back to New York,” she said, “I want to review the entire schedule again.”
“We can do that.”
“I want to avoid any more mistakes.”
I looked at her.
“We’ll avoid them, together.”
The word “team” must continue to resonate even though I know what she wants when we

return to New York. The elevator jerked, sharp and abrupt. Clara grabbed the handrail.
“Did you feel that?”
“Yes.”
The system vibrated, a metallic clang echoed through the structure. And then… another, louder bang. The ascent stopped abruptly.
“Good Lord! What was that?!”
“I don’t know,” I replied, pretending I didn’t understand what was happening.
