I rest the phone between my ear and shoulder as I give some documents on the makeshift table I’m using as a desk one last look. It’s not a real office. It’s a space adapted for the race, with blueprints rolled up in a corner, open folders, coffee that’s already gone cold… and the constant feeling that everything depends on nothing going wrong again.

“Are you sure?” Ethan’s voice comes through, firm, but with that familiar undertone. “I don’t want any surprises, Clara.”

I barely smile. He’s been worried because it’s been longer than expected. Days in which many wedding preparations have been put on hold.

“You won’t have any.”

I walk slowly through the space, looking out the window at the construction site.

“Alexander has met with the teams, managed to get the permits sorted, we have the remaining signatures… the project is moving forward.”

I pause… Because there’s something else. Something I think, something I almost say. The company needs Alexander. I feel it… I see it, I understand it. But I don’t say it, I can’t. Because I know what that would do to Ethan. I know what it would mean, and it’s not the right time.

“I’m glad to hear that,” he finally replies. “I want this to be over without any more delays.”

“It will be.”

A brief silence.

Are you okay?”

The question catches me off guard.

“Yes.” I look at my hands. “I’m fine.”

“Call me if you need anything.”

“Always.”

I smile.

The call ends. And silence returns. I stay still for a few seconds, thinking, feeling. Because

not everything is as simple as it seems. It never is.

“Mrs. Sinclair.”

The voice pulls me from my thoughts, and I look up. Howard is in the doorway.

“You asked to see me.”

I nod.

“Yes… come in.”

He closes the door behind him and approaches with his usual respectful demeanor. Correct, professional, and that… that’s what makes everything more difficult. I observe him for a few seconds, and there’s something about him… Something that doesn’t fit with the image I have of him on paper, something that makes me quietly uneasy. Empathy, perhaps, or nostalgia… I don’t know.

I pick up the letter on the table and hold it in my hands.

“Howard…”

I begin. My voice comes out softer than I expected.

“We’ve been reviewing the leave reports.”

He nods.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“And we found some inconsistencies.”

His expression barely changes.

“Inconsistencies that have directly affected the project’s progress.”

He swallows.

“I… I don’t understand.”

I look him straight in the eye.

“I’m going to be clear with you.”

Pause.

“The company has decided to remove you from the project.”

Silence falls abruptly.

“What?”

His reaction is immediate, genuine.

“And…” I take a deep breath “that also means the termination of your contract with the company.”

I hand him the letter; he doesn’t take it. He stares at it as if he doesn’t understand.

“No… it can’t be.”

He looks up at me.

“Ms. Sinclair, I did my job properly.”

My chest tightens.

“Howard…”

“I checked everything” he insists “I didn’t make those mistakes.”

There’s something in his voice, something that hurts.

“My wife is sick,” he adds suddenly. “I need this job.”

I close my eyes for a second, just one. Because that doesn’t change the facts. Or does it?

“I’m sorry,” I say quietly.

“Sorry?” he repeats incredulously.

I force myself to stand firm.

“This is serious.”

“But it wasn’t me.”

My mind returns to the documents, the signatures, the modifications. All pointing to him, all too clear. Too… clean.

“Howard…” I look at him more closely. “Did someone give you money?”

He blinks.

Chapter 251: One More Day The Dismissal

“What?”

“To sabotage the project.”

The question comes out direct, without beating around the bush. His reaction is immediate, almost offended.

“No.” He takes a step back. “I swear on my life… I didn’t do any of that.”

I hold his gaze, searching for something. A crack, a lie. But I can’t find it. And that….. that

makes me even more uncomfortable.

“There’s a lot of evidence against you,” I finally say.

He lowers his gaze, takes a deep breath. And then… I understand. He won’t convince me, he

can’t.

He takes the letter, his hands tense.

“This isn’t right,” he murmurs.

I don’t respond, because I don’t know what to say. Because a part of me… thinks the same.

He turns… He walks toward the door. And before leaving, he says something that sticks with.

“I hope someday you will see what really happened.”

The door closes and I’m left alone. With the weight of a decision that… doesn’t feel as right.

as it should.
