Chapter 260: Something Doesn’t Click, Part 3.-1
Clara
When I returned to the office, my head felt heavy. It wasn’t fear yet, nor certainty… It was something worse: doubt. The right kind of doubt can destroy everything.
I entered the executive floor clutching my bag more tightly than necessary. The folder Howard had given me felt like it weighed a ton inside. I tried to act normal, walk normally, breathe normally. But my mind was still stuck in the coffee.
“The documents aren’t the same ones I sent.”
“Someone changed things.”
The elevator doors opened, and I’d barely taken a few steps out when I heard Alexander’s voice.
“Are you ready?”
I looked up. There he was. Dressed impeccably in jet black, as usual. His jacket was perfectly tailored, his watch gleaming in the hallway lights, the confident posture of a man accustomed to control.
He had his briefcase in one hand and some documents in the other. He looked exactly the same as always. And yet… Something inside me wasn’t looking at him the same way anymore.
My eyes lingered on his face for just a few seconds longer than usual, his jaw, his eyes. The tranquility in his expression, the calm.
And the thought came to me on its own. Brutal, unexpected.
Was it you?
My throat tightened.
But why?
Because it didn’t make sense, it didn’t. If the project failed… he lost too. Money, time, prestige. Everything.
So why?
Why risk something so big?
Why tamper with documents?
Why cause delays?
Why play with something like this?
I felt a slight shiver run down my spine.
Alexander frowned slightly at how still I was.
“Everything alright?”

blinked rapidly, reacting.
“Yes. Too fast.
He studied me for a few more seconds.
“You look a little strange.”
My heart pounded once. I smiled. An automatic, perfect, practiced smile.
“No, everything’s fine.”
I clutched my bag to my side.
“Better than ever.”
Something in his gaze shifted slightly, as if he didn’t quite believe me. But he didn’t press the issue, just adjusted the briefcase.
“We have the meeting in five minutes.”
I nodded.
“Sure.”

I started walking beside him down the hallway. And for the first time in a long time… the silence between us felt awkward.
Alexander spoke first.
“I’ve been thinking about a couple of ideas for after Boston.”
I barely turned my head toward him.
“Oh, really?”
“Yes.”
His tone brightened a bit.
“There’s an interesting expansion line in Chicago. And also a residential corporate project we could develop if we bring in certain investors now.”
“We could.”
The word hit me harder than it should have. We kept walking.
“It would be very ambitious,” he continued. “And I honestly think this is the best time to grow.”
I stopped abruptly.
He turned slightly toward me. I looked directly at him.
“I think we should wait.”
Alexander blinked once.

“Until we’re completely out of Boston.”
My voice came out colder than I intended.
Glan
“That’s still the most important project right now. I don’t think we should start looking at new expansions just yet.”
I saw something shift slightly in his expression not exactly annoyance, but attention.
“Let’s not get too ambitious,” I added.
Silence… The hallway seemed longer than usual.
Alexander watched me, his brow slightly furrowed.
“Right?”
I held his gaze.
“What?”
“Are you okay?”
My breathing slowed. And for a second I had the absurd feeling that he could see exactly what I was thinking.
I shook my head slowly.
“I’m perfectly fine.”
Then I added: “Or should there be something I should be worried about?”
His eyes lingered on me for another moment, too stili, too calculating.
Then he barely shook his head.
“No.”
And he said nothing more.
The meeting passed before my eyes like noise. I spoke, I answered, I smiled. I made decisions… But my mind was still elsewhere. On dates, permits, records. And on the way Alexander seemed to resolve every problem the moment it arose. Too perfect, too convenient.
When I got home it was already night. The mansion was silent, elegant, peaceful.
