Chapter 261: Something Doesn’t Click, Part 3-2

At that moment, I felt anything but calm. I didn’t even bother to change… I couldn’t do something as basic as that. I went straight into the office, turned on the desk lamp, and took out the folder Howard had given me-papers, copies, backups, dates. Everything was spread out in front of me again.

I took a breath.

“Come on…” I murmured.

I wanted to find a mistake, something that would prove I was overreacting. Because honestly, I didn’t want to suspect Alexander. I didn’t want to. Yes, there was tension between us. Yes, I knew he had feelings for me. Yes, the issue of excluding him from certain future decisions was going to be delicate. But that was one thing… and sabotaging a multimillion-dollar project was something else entirely.

I sat down and started going through it line by line: emails, schedules, authorizations. And then I saw it. Something small, ridiculously small. But enough to stop me. One of the altered authorizations had an internal revision code, an administrative code.

My eyes slowly drifted down to another document. Then to another, and another.

My breathing began to slow.

Because I recognized the pattern, that kind of manual correction… It could only be done by certain executive profiles. Not by Howard, not by a technical supervisor, not by just any employee. Only by someone with higher authorization. Someone very high up.

My heart began to pound.

I grabbed another document and compared it. And then the detail that completely froze me appeared. A secondary digital signature, not visible to the naked eye, but recorded in the edit history.

I felt a horrible emptiness in my stomach.

No. No. It couldn’t be that simple, but it could also be other people. Right? Right?

I stood up too quickly and started pacing around the desk. I didn’t want to think, I didn’t want to reach any conclusions. But my mind was already putting the pieces together on its own.

The delay, the speed with which he resolved everything. The desperate desire to prove he was indispensable, the fear of leaving the company.

I brought a hand to my mouth, because for the first time… For the first time, I truly thought: What if it was him?

A soft knock on the door startled me, and I quickly looked up. Ethan appeared in the entryway, handsome, familiar, confident. And I immediately felt guilty. Because he looked at me with affection while I was thinking about another man. Even if it was for something terrible.

“Honey…” His voice was gentle. “I’ve been waiting for you in the dining room for half an hour.”

blinked, looked at the clock, damn it. It was much later than I thought.

“My love, I’m sorry.”

I quickly closed some documents.

“Time completely slipped away.”

He walked a little further into the office.

“You’re working too much.”

He barely smiled.

“Again.”

I tried to smile back.

“I’m pretty lost in thought today.”

Ethan looked at me more closely then, and something in his expression changed slightly. More attentive.

“Is something wrong?”

My gaze went directly to the open folder. Then to him, and I felt an overwhelming urge to tell him everything. Howard, the documents, the doubts, the signature… But something stopped me. Because if I was wrong… I could destroy too many things. And if I was right… Then the problem was much bigger than I imagined.

I shook my head slowly.

“No.”

My voice came out softer.

“Nothing’s wrong.”

I lied. And I hated doing it.

Ethan moved close enough to take my hand. His warm fingers immediately encircled pine.

“Come have dinner with me.”

I looked at him. And for a second, I desperately wished my life could go back to being simple. That Boston had all been stress, that Alexander had nothing to do with it, that Howard was wrong. That I was wrong, but as Ethan intertwined his fingers with mine and led me out of the office…

My mind was still stuck on what I’d seen before… And for the first time… Alexander started to feel dangerous.

Should I treat him more carefully starting tomorrow?

No, I shouldn’t act differently. That would let him know I suspect him, and I don’t know what his intentions

are with all this… because, if he’s the one involved in everything that happened…

Htook a deep breath, let go of that problem for a moment, and sat down to dinner with my fiancé.

I looked at Ethan, wanting to tell him, but I know they have a less-than-friendly relationship, and I don’t want to add fuel to the fire, at least not without being sure I’m pointing the finger at the right person.
