“They turned out beautifully,” Ethan said, entering the room. His voice snapped me out of my trance immediately…

I blinked several times before turning to face him.

He had just loosened his tie and had a calm expression, tired from the day… but as soon as his eyes met mine, that calmness shifted slightly. Because he was really looking at me. And Ethan always knew when something was wrong with me.

I forced a smile. One that didn’t even feel real to me.

“Thank you… they’re lovely.”

He walked slowly toward me, observed the flowers arranged in the vase, and then looked at me again. Too attentive, too perceptive.

“Yes,” he murmured. “But you can tell me what’s going on now.”

I felt my stomach clench.

He put a hand in his pants pocket while holding my gaze.

“You can’t fool me, Clara. I know something’s wrong.”

I looked down almost immediately, because yes. Yes, I could keep hiding it. I could tell him again that I was tired, that it had been a long day, that I was just stressed about work. I could do it… But Ethan knew me too well. And besides… I didn’t know how much longer I could carry

all of this alone.

I let out a long, heavy sigh.

And when I looked up at him again, I murmured: “You’re right… I have to tell you.”

I saw his full attention turn to me.

I slowly sat down on the edge of the bed, and he did the same across from me, waiting. And

for a moment I was silent. Because I didn’t even know where to begin.

“What happened in Boston…” I finally murmured. “I don’t think it was an accident.”

His expression barely changed.

“What do you mean?”

I swallowed.

My hands began to fidget nervously. But I took a breath and began to recount everything, every detail, of what happened in Boston and what started to happen here… From the beginning… Howard, the altered documents. The inconsistencies I found. The meeting with Howard at the café… The evidence he showed me. And finally… The engineer’s call. He didn’t know I had spent two long hours with Alexander in an elevator. The silence returned… But this time it was much worse. Because I could perfectly feel the tension building in Ethan.

His eyes darkened slightly.

“Did Alexander take you there knowing that?”

“That’s what the engineer said… I, I don’t know… I don’t know for sure yet.” But even saying those words… something inside me was already starting to believe it. And that was what scared me the most.

Ethan rested his elbows on his knees and looked down for a few seconds.

I saw him take a deep breath, trying to control himself. Because I knew him, I knew exactly how he was reacting inside. Fury… A massive fury.

“Clara,” he finally said, raising his eyes to mine. “That elevator could have killed you.”

I felt a chill run through me. Because hearing those words out loud made everything feel even more real.

“I don’t want to jump to conclusions,” I murmured quickly. “I need to be sure before accusing him of something like this.”

“Sure?”

His voice was harsher than usual.

“What more do you need to be sure?”

and ran a hand over his face. He took only a few steps back; I could

He turned to me.

“No. Listen to me now.”

His gaze held something that sent a shiver down my spine.

“I can endure him wanting to hurt me,” he said firmly. “I can endure any corporate attack, any dirty trick… but I won’t tolerate him putting you in danger.”

My chest tightened. Because Ethan wasn’t speaking as a businessman, he was speaking as

a man. As the man who loved me.

“I still don’t know if it was intentional,” I whispered.

“I do think it was.”

The response was immediate. The air grew heavy again.

I slowly lowered my gaze and then confessed what was tormenting me most.

“The worst part is… I’m starting to think the same thing.”

My voice cracked at the very end.

“Look at me.”

I did, and his expression softened slightly.

“You’re not alone in this.”

I felt a horrible burning sensation behind my eyes.

“I feel like an idiot,” I confessed softly. “Because I trusted him… I thought I couldn’t leave the company without him, I even considered it.”

“That doesn’t make you an idiot.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“It makes you a good person.”

A silent tear rolled down my cheek, and I quickly wiped it away.

Ethan watched me for a few more seconds. And then he asked something that left me

speechless.

“Do you think he still has feelings for you?”

My heart pounded in my chest. Because that question… That question changed everything.

“I don’t know…”

“I do…”
