Chapter 266: I need to confirm it.
Clara
I couldn’t concentrate, I tried. I really tried. But my mind kept returning to the same place.
Alexander.
I couldn’t feel at ease, not since my suspicions about him had intensified.
I paced back and forth in my office, clutching my arms to my chest. I felt anxious, a horrible anxiety that had my heart racing since early morning.
I looked at the documents on my desk for the fifth time. The copies Howard had given me- the dates didn’t match, nor did the modifications. And then there was the engineer.
“I warned Mr. Alexander not to use that elevator.”
I closed my eyes for a second. I needed something more, something that pointed directly at him, something more than just suspicion. I could still hear that phrase perfectly.
I opened my eyes again and let out a shaky sigh.
No, I didn’t want to believe it. Because if Alexander had done all that… then he had also put me in danger. And that was what was affecting me the most. That I trusted him… I trusted him when the elevator started moving, I trusted him when he hugged me, I trusted him when he said everything was going to be alright.
My throat closed up.
I stopped in front of my office window and looked down.
New York was still moving as if nothing had happened. People coming and going. Cars, lights, noise. And I felt my world slowly beginning to sway.
I heard movement outside, I barely turned my head.
Alexander came out of his office, my breath caught in my throat. He was dressed entirely in jet black, elegant, confident. As always. He was carrying a folder in one hand while talking to one of the assistants from the finance department. And then something absurd happened
I looked at him, trying to find guilt in his face, but I saw nothing. Nothing. No nerves, no
tension, no fear.
Alexander walked like a man who was in complete control.

My fingers slowly closed around my arm, and he looked up at that moment.
For a second, I thought he was going to see me through the glass, but no. He kept walking. Then he disappeared toward the elevators.
I swallowed hard. And before I could stop, I left my office.
My assistant looked up as soon as she saw me.
“Everything alright, Miss Sinclair?”
I nodded quickly.
“Yes… yes, of course.”
My voice sounded strange even to me. I glanced down the hallway where Alexander had disappeared.
“Did Mr. Alexander leave?”
“Yes. He has a meeting with the investors from Brooklyn.”
“Oh, so… he’ll be out?”
“Yes… I think he’ll be out for at least an hour and a half.”
My heart pounded. An hour and a half. My mind reacted before I could think about it too much. Before fear could stop me, because a part of me couldn’t bear the doubt any longer. I needed to know, I needed to stop imagining scenarios. I needed to confirm if Alexander was guilty… or if I was going crazy.
“I understand,” I murmured.
My assistant went back to her work, and I stood still for just a few seconds. Feeling my breath quicken, this was wrong. Very wrong. I shouldn’t go into his office, I shouldn’t go through his things, I shouldn’t invade his privacy like that. But then I remembered the elevator stopping abruptly. The lights going out, my fear. And the engineer’s words.
“He knew.”
“Son of a bitch, I could have died that day…” I whispered to myself.
I closed my eyes for just a second, then turned around and started walking toward Alexander’s office.
Each step made my heart beat faster, my hands started to sweat I felt quiltu of finding something. But were
