Chapter 268: I Must Do Something…

Clara

I don’t remember how I managed to get out from under that desk without making a sound, I only remember my hands trembling.

My breath was ragged, and fear coursed through my entire body as I heard the door close on the other side. I waited a few more seconds, maybe a minute. I don’t know. Time seemed strange down there.

When I was sure Alexander and Vanessa were gone, I slowly got out. My legs barely responded.

I leaned against the edge of the desk, trying to catch my breath. But then my gaze fell back on the computer, on the open emails, on the evidence. And something inside me changed… Because it wasn’t suspicion anymore, it was him.

Alexander had caused everything, Howard.

I felt rage, a cold rage. Painful…

I grabbed my phone quickly.

My fingers could barely coordinate as I started taking pictures of the documents. One, two, five… Ten. Then I opened my sss and forwarded several messages from Alexander’s computer to a private account I hardly ever used. Every second I felt like he could log in again.

My heart was pounding so hard my chest ached.

I quickly checked the sent messages. I erased all traces, deleted my recent history. I closed windows. I put everything back exactly as it was, or at least I tried to.

I took a breath, another one, and left. I walked fast, too fast. The people in the hallway probably noticed something strange about me, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to get to my office.

When I got inside, I immediately locked the door.

My back hit the wood, and then… I breathed. For the first time since I’d entered Alexander’s office, my hands went to my chest. I could feel my heart pounding wildly under my blouse.

“Oh my God…” I whispered.

My vision began to blur slightly, not from tears, but from shock, because I never imagined it would come to this. I never imagined having to hide under Alexander’s desk to discover that the man I trusted… was willing to destroy his own project to manipulate situations in his favor. And worse, that he was willing to put me in danger.

I slowly moved away from the door and went to my desk… I picked up the landline and dialed my lawyer’s office directly.

“I need to see Mr. Levin right now,” I said as soon as the phone answered.

My voice sounded strange, tense.

“Miss Sinclair, he has a meeting at…”

“It’s urgent.”

There was silence on the other end, then the receptionist answered.

“I’ll let him know immediately.”

I hung up and sat there, staring into space, my legs still trembling under the desk. Outside,

The lawyer observed me closely, very closely. Too closely, as if he already suspected where this was going.

“It depends on the severity,” he replied calmly. “Are we talking about negligence? Fraud? Financial manipulation? Corporate sabotage?”

My throat burned.

Sabotage.

The word sounded awful, because that’s exactly what it was.

I looked him in the eye.

“Is there any legal way to remove that person from the company?”

The lawyer was silent for a few seconds. And then he asked carefully…

“You mean Alexander?”

I didn’t answer, but there was no need.

The man let out a slow sigh and placed both hands on his legs.

“Clara… Alexander isn’t just an employee. He’s a partner. And not only that, he was the

majority investor during the expansion in New York. Legally, he has a very strong stake in the

company.”

I looked down for a second; I already knew. But hearing it out loud made everything worse.

“However,” he continued, “if there is evidence that he acted deliberately against the company’s interests, then legal action could be taken.”

I immediately looked up.

“What kind of action?”

“You could initiate an internal process with the board of directors alleging breach of fiduciary duty.”

I frowned slightly.

He continued explaining calmly.

“In New York, a corporate partner has a legal obligation to act in the best interests of the company. If it is proven that Alexander manipulated documents, caused financial losses, or deliberately jeopardized important transactions… that could be considered a serious breach

of his duties as a partner.”

My breathing quickened again.

“Would that be enough to get him out?”

The lawyer shook his head slowly.

“Not immediately.” Of course. Nothing with Alexander was going to be easy.

“But it would open up an important legal avenue,” he continued. “The board could vote on restrictions to his duties, limit operational access, or even negotiate a forced buyout of his stake if serious corporate harm is proven.”

Forced buyout. That made my mind race.

“And what if he refuses?”

The lawyer held my gaze.

“Then we’re in corporate litigation.”

God…

I ran a hand over my forehead. This was all escalating too fast, way too fast.

“And how strong would the case have to be?”

“Very strong.”

My stomach tightened.

He leaned slightly forward.

“Clara… if you’re going to do something like this against Alexander, you need irrefutable proof. Because he doesn’t just have power within this company. He has influence. Contacts. A significant shareholding. And besides…” He paused briefly. “He doesn’t seem like someone who’s going to go down without a fight.”

No. I already knew that.

Alexander would never leave quietly, he would never accept defeat.

My fingers slowly closed around the phone.

Then I looked up.

“What if I have proof?”

The lawyer stared at me intently; for the first time, I saw real tension in his expression.

“Then the first thing you should do is protect it. Absolutely everything. Off-site copies. Digital backups. And don’t confront him yet.”

I swallowed hard, because yes… Part of me wanted to go to Alexander’s office immediately and ask him why.

Why did you do all this? Why did you put me in danger?

But another part… Another part was beginning to understand something worse. Alexander wasn’t acting emotionally; he was playing strategically. And that made him far more dangerous.
