Chapter 270: The Black Club.

Manhattan traffic was crawling that night… From inside my car, I watched the city lights. reflect on the windshield as my fingers gently tapped the steering wheel to the rhythm of a song I wasn’t even really listening to.
My mind was elsewhere, on that strange tension that had begun to grow between us since
we got back.
Something was different. She could put on a show in front of others. She could smile in meetings, she could act as if everything was perfectly fine. But I knew her too well. I had learned to read her silences even better than her words. And Clara Sinclair was hiding
something.
My phone buzzed through the car’s Bluetooth system.
I frowned slightly when I saw the name.
Hale.
I answered immediately.
“Yes?”
“Alexander.”
His tone was calm, too calm. That was enough to put me on alert.
“Did something happen?”
There was a brief silence before he answered.
“Yes… we need to talk.”
My gaze fixed on the brightly lit avenue in front of me. There it was. That feeling… the same one you get seconds before something explodes.
“Now?” I asked.
“Yes. Can you come to the Black Club?”
I clenched my jaw slightly.
The Black Club wasn’t a place for casual conversations. It was the kind of place where

businessmen closed multimillion-dollar deals… or destroyed alliances.
“Sure,” I replied calmly. “I’ll be there.”
The call ended. And for several seconds, the inside of the car was completely silent.

My fingers stopped moving on the steering wheel. Something wasn’t right. I could feel it.
I breathed slowly as I changed lanes. Maybe it was about work, a project… maybe something personal.
My eyes narrowed slightly.
No, I don’t know why he’s calling me. But then I formed an idea and denied it immediately. No … After everything that happened there… after being an unsung hero, no… I don’t think it’s about her again.
It wouldn’t make sense.
Although Clara had been acting strange lately, too observant, too cold at times.
I remembered that meeting earlier, her sitting across from me reviewing documents while I talked about future projects. And her response.
“I think we should wait.”
Dry, distant. As if she wanted to draw a line between us.
I sighed.
Maybe I was paranoid, maybe she was just tired. Or maybe Ethan was already filling her head with nonsense again.
I smiled humorlessly. That man was never going to trust me. And honestly… he was right.
I parked in front of the Black club twenty minutes later.
I handed the keys to the valet and straightened my jacket before going in.
The place was elegant as always, dark, exclusive, quiet. The aroma of expensive whiskey and fine wood hung in the air as important men spoke of millions as if they were mere numbers.
I scanned the room until I found Hale sitting alone at one of the private tables in the back. He had a glass in front of him and an expression I didn’t like at all. That confirmed it for me: something was wrong.
I walked slowly toward him, and Hale looked up as I approached.

“You sounded worried,” I replied as I sat down across from him. “And that’s not like you.”
He gave a small, tired laugh.
“I guess not.”
A waiter appeared immediately, and I ordered whiskey.
When the man walked away, Hale took a slow breath. But he didn’t speak; he just stared at
the glass in his hands. And that made me even more uncomfortable because Hale wasn’t an
indecisive man. Never.
“What’s wrong?” I finally asked.
He looked up at me, seemingly carefully considering how to say whatever it was he had to say. And the longer he took… the clearer it became that I wasn’t going to like it.
I picked up the glass they had just brought me and took a small sip.
“Hale.”
The man sighed, shifted in his seat, and then said something that made my entire body
tense.
“The company is experiencing its best financial period in years… and yet I feel like something is breaking between you two.”
My eyes locked on him; I didn’t need any more explanation. This was about Clara, that much was clear.
