Chapter 284: Preparing for the Worst.
Alexander
I didn’t sleep… And when I finally closed my eyes, I dreamt of that boardroom.
25 Fonta
Clara staring at me from across the table, Hale avoiding defending me. Those damned/documents
projected in front of everyone like a death sentence.
I opened my eyes with a start, the darkness of my apartment silently greeting me. I ran a hand over
my face and slowly sat up in bed; it was 4:17 in the morning.
Shit, I can’t go on like this…
I sighed and sat for a few seconds, staring at the city through the windows. New York was still
alive, and I… And I felt like everything was starting to crumble beneath my feet.
I stood up and walked to the minibar, poured whiskey… A lot of whiskey.
I took a long swig as my mind kept returning to the same thought. The external investigation, that
was what was truly dangerous. Because facing internal accusations was one thing. But having an.
external firm review emails, permits, financial transactions, records, calls… was quite another. That’s where they could find things. And even though I had been careful… nobody’s perfect.
I squeezed the glass between my fingers; Clara wasn’t going to stop. Now I understood that perfectly; she wasn’t hesitating anymore. She wasn’t confused anymore. Now she wanted to get rid of me… And she probably would.
I felt rage, a dark rage. Because all of this was a damn betrayal. I helped her, I took her to places. she would never have gone on her own… I opened doors for her, I gave her contacts. I expanded that company with her. And now she intended to destroy me as if I were a sick dog.
I laughed humorlessly.
“Unbelievable…” I muttered.
I picked up my phone and dialed a number. They answered on the third ring.
“Sir?”
“I need you to expedite the investment moves.”
There was silence.
“All of them?”
I looked at the city again.

Chapter 284 Preparing for the Worst
“The most important ones.”
“Do you want me to wait until the quarterly close?”
“No.”
My voice catre out harsher.
“Do it now.”
The man hesitated.
“Alexander… that might raise eyebrows.”
“I don’t give a damn.”
I hung up.
Points
I finished the whiskey in one gulp and slammed the glass down on the table. I wasn’t going to sit around waiting to be sunk, no. If all this ended up blowing up… I had to protect what was mine. My stocks, my money, my properties… My external contracts. Everything.
Because if the board ended up officially removing me… many would start running like rats. Investors, partners, contacts. People who greeted me today would pretend not to know me
tomorrow-that’s how this world worked. It always had.
I walked to my office and turned on my computer. I started reviewing accounts, transfers, affiliated
companies. Funds.
I moved significant sums to other corporate accounts, legal protections, financial safeguards.
Everything had to be kept far from any possible freeze or aggressive audit.
My lawyer was right. If this escalated… this would no longer be just a business problem. It could
become something legal. Very legal. And I wasn’t going to go down alone.
I took a slow breath; my reflection appeared in the dark glass of the window.
I looked tired, and that irritated me.
I wasn’t a weak man, I never had been. Never. But for the first time in many years… I felt like I was
losing control. And that was something I didn’t know how to handle.
My phone vibrated again.
Hale.
I looked at it for a few seconds before answering.
I glanced at the clock on my wall; morning had arrived, it was 6:30a.m.

Chapter 284: Preparing for the Worst.
“Yes?”
“The external firm will begin the process tomorrow.”
I closed my eyes for a moment, so quickly.
“I understand.”
“Alexander…”
“What?”
The man was silent for a few seconds.
“Help me help you.”
I let out a bitter laugh.
“Does that mean you’re still on my side?”
“It means I still want to believe there’s a less serious explanation than it seems.”
I looked at the open documents in front of me. Emails, transfers, transactions. The image of the
elevator flashed back into my mind, Clara, terrified… trembling, clinging to me.
Damn it…
Everything had spiraled out of control from that moment on.
“I didn’t do anything to destroy the company,” I finally said.
And it was true. I never meant to destroy it. I just wanted to buy time, Hale sighed.
“I hope so.”
The call ended… I stood still, completely still. Until I made a decision.
I wasn’t going to wait for the final blow. If this was going to collapse… I’d get out first. With money, with power, with something. Because losing the company was already a possibility. But losing absolutely everything… that I would never allow.
I had to accept my stupidity.
My emotions got the better of me. What I had criticized Vanessa for so much, now… now I had done it myself.
My attempt to do something smart, to avoid being ousted from the company, made everything
easier for Clara. I accelerated this. I paved the way for her to achieve what she wanted.
