Chapter 283: What’s the Worst?

Alexander

The elevator doors slammed shut behind me.. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t look at anyone, I

didn’t want to look at anyone.

I walked down the company hallway with heavy, tense steps, filled with a rage that simmered

beneath my skin.

My lawyers followed behind me, talking amongst themselves in hushed tones, flipping pages, reviewing notes, but their voices sounded distant. Remote. As if everything were happening inside

a damn fishbowl. People were staring as we passed, of course they were. News of that meeting

was going to spread like wildfire. The great Alexander sitting at the front of the entire board while Clara Sinclair practically accused him of corporate sabotage.

I clenched my jaw, no, no. This couldn’t be happening.

I reached the end of the hallway and stopped in front of the windows. New York was still out there,

vast, bright, indifferent to the way my life had just begun to crumble.

I turned to my lawyers.

“Speak plainly,” I said quietly. “What could happen?”

They exchanged glances, which annoyed me even more.

“Don’t look at me like that and just speak up.”

Richard, the older of the two, sighed wearily before adjusting his glasses.

“Alexander… if it’s proven that you manipulated internal documents, deliberately delayed permits,

and jeopardized the Boston project…”

“Let’s suppose they do,” I interrupted. “What happens?”

There was an awkward silence…

Then he replied: “They could temporarily or permanently remove you from the company’s

executive operations.”

My stomach clenched.

“They can’t do that.”

“Yes, they can.”

Chapter 283: What’s the Worst?

I stared at him….

He continued.

“Especially if the board concludes there was a breach of fiduciary duty to the company.”

I felt a sharp blow to my chest.

“And my shares?”

“They would remain yours until there is a sale or a different resolution. But they could/completely

limit your decision-making power within the company.”

I shook my head slowly.

No… No. That was impossible. That company was mine too. I had built a large part of it. I had

opened doors. I had invested money… Contacts.

“Anything else?” I asked coldly.

Richard looked at me again with that honesty that was starting to irritate me.

“If they believe there was corporate fraud or willful negligence putting employees or partners at

risk… Clara could sue you civilly.”

I felt a horrible emptiness.

“And criminally?”

The lawyer took barely two seconds to answer. But those two seconds were enough to tell me

everything.

“Depending on what the external investigation determines… yes, that possibility exists.”

I let out a dry laugh… a humorless laugh.

I ran a hand over my mouth and looked at the floor.

Everything could go to hell… Everything. The company, my name, my reputation, my investments,

my contracts. All because of a woman who had decided I was disposable.

I slowly raised my head.

“They don’t have anything solid,” I said, more to myself than to them. “They can’t prove it.”

Richard didn’t respond.

And that silence was worse than any words.

I took a deep breath.

Chapter 283 What’s the Worst?

“Leave me alone.”

“Alexander…”

“I said leave me alone.”

They nodded and walked away down the hall. I stood still for a few more seconds.

Then I walked straight to Hale’s office. I didn’t knock; I opened the door abruptly.

The man immediately looked up from his desk.

He frowned.

“What are you doing here?”

I closed the door behind me.

“I want to talk to you.”

Hale slowly placed his pen on the table.

“This isn’t a good time.”

“Do you really think so?”

My voice came out harsher than I expected. The man watched me silently.

I walked until I was standing in front of his desk.

“Do you really think I did all that?”

Hale didn’t answer right away.

And for the first time since that damn meeting… I felt afraid.

I smiled slightly. A strained smile. Forced.

“Come on, Hale… you’ve known me for years.”

The man remained serious, too serious.

“Do you really think I would put my own company at risk?”

Nothing… Not a single reaction.

The smile slowly faded.

“Is that what you think of me?”

Hale let out a heavy sigh and stood up from his chair.
