Chapter 286: Fleeing Like a “Coward”

Clara

The door was still open. Alexander stood with his back to me, a few steps away from leaving my

office, while I stared at the envelope on my desk as if it were a bomb about to explode.

My breathing was still ragged; I didn’t like this… it shouldn’t be like this. It wasn’t fair to cause harm

and then say, “I’m out,” without consequences.

He wasn’t a man who would back down, not a man who would simply abandon the board. That’s

why, when he started again… his speech, the one where he justifies that we’re doing this to hurt

him, because we’re the bad guys, not him…

I stood up slowly.

“A show?”

Alexander let out a bitter laugh.

“That’s what you want, isn’t it? To make me look like a monster in front of everyone.”

He said it without looking at me; I could only see his back.

I frowned.

“If you didn’t do anything… then shut me up.”

He barely turned his face toward me.

“What?”

His eyes are fixed on me now.

I stood up slowly.

“Wait until the investigation is over. Wait until everyone realizes I’m the one who’s wrong.”

I took a step toward him.

“If you’re innocent, then you have nothing to fear.”

Alexander let out a dry laugh and shook his head.

“I’m not going to play your absurd game.”

I felt something boil inside me-anger, exhaustion, pain. All at once.

“Now you’re a coward.”

He walked completely toward me, his eyes hardening immediately.

“What did you say?”

“What you heard.”

My voice came out louder, more shaky.

“You weren’t a coward when you did everything you did in Boston. You weren’t a coward when you tried to manipulate everything to your advantage. You weren’t a coward when you almost killed me by squeezing me into a broken elevator, but… But now… you’re running away?”

Alexander took a step toward me.

“I’m not running away.”

“Of course you are.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I almost died in that damn elevator!”

My voice echoed throughout the office, and the silence that followed was brutal.

Alexander stared at me. And for the first time… I saw real anger in him. A dark, dangerous kind.

“You weren’t going to die.”

I let out a disbelieving laugh.

“Do you hear how sick that sounds?”

He roughly ran a hand through his beard.

“This all got out of control.”

“Because you pushed it to that point!”

“Because you wanted to get me out of the company!”

My chest rose and fell rapidly.

“Because you stopped being someone trustworthy!”

Alexander moved closer, too close.

“Stop acting so important, Clara.”

I felt the sting of those words.

“What?”

Chapter 286 Fleeing Like a Coward” “This was your goal from the start.”

His eyes burned with rage.

“You wanted to get rid of me.”

I shook my head slowly.

“Not like this.”

“Yes, you did.”

He laughed humorlessly.

“Since your husband doesn’t want me here anymore… now you are doing to me the same thing that

you two did to Vanessa.”

My body tensed.

“What does Vanessa have to do with this?”

Alexander let out a bitter laugh.

“You think I don’t know?”

His eyes scanned me with contempt.

“Unfairly firing a woman who worked for Ethan’s company for years just because you couldn’t

stand seeing her near him.”

I opened my mouth, but he kept talking.

“Vanessa was kicked out because you’re a fucking insecure bitch.”

The sentence hit me right in the chest, my breath caught in my throat. And then I understood

something.

Something horrible…

I stared at him.

“Is that why?”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

“Does all this have to do with Vanessa? With Ethan…? With me?”

He let out a dry laugh.

Chapter 286: Fleeing Like a “Coward

“Sure. Now you want to play the smart one.”

My heart started pounding. Too hard.

Alexander didn’t answer, and that silence spoke louder than words.

I took a step toward him.

“She… did you do this together?”

Nothing.

“Did she help you?”

His jaw tightened.

“Don’t bring Vanessa into this.”

I let out a disbelieving laugh.

“Oh my God!”

I pointed directly at him.

“Yes, she was involved.”

Alexander took another step toward me.

“Watch what you say.”

“Or what?”

I couldn’t stop myself anymore; all the pent-up rage erupted.

“What else did you two do? What else were you planning? How far did you intend to go?”

“You don’t know anything.”

“I know enough!”

“You have no proof against Vanessa.”

“But I do have proof against you.”

That was enough. I saw something break in his eyes. Something dangerous, dark. His voice came. out low, too low.

“You’re wrong about me.”

And I exploded. I raised my hand, and the slap echoed throughout the office.

Yes, I let my anger take over, and I slapped him. The sound froze even me…

Alexander barely turned his face from the blow… then, there was silence.

A/horrible silence…

He slowly looked at me again, and I felt fear. Real fear.
