The CEO's Regret: Darling, Don’t Leave Me novel Chapter 378

We agreed I was going to pick you up.”

“I know, it’s just that… I was feeling a little tired and my schedule finished a little early.”

“You should have called me.”

“You must have been busy.”

Something in her tone didn’t sit right with me…

“Honey, is everything okay?”

“Yes, I’m just… I’m just tired.”

The call ended, and the silence on the other end left me with a strange feeling in my chest.

I looked at the phone for a few seconds before slowly putting it down.

Claren

Clara told me she was home. She said she’d left early because she was tired, but why didn’t she let

me know? We know each other well, so well that I could tell something wasn’t right with her…

Something didn’t add up.

I drove the rest of the way feeling that unease growing beneath my skin.

A silent pressure. A bad feeling I couldn’t shake.

When I arrived at the mansion, I handed the keys to the valet and went straight inside.

The house was too quiet… Too quiet.

“Good evening, Mr. Blake,” the housekeeper greeted me as soon as she saw me enter.

I nodded absently while loosening my tie.

“Clara?”

“Miss Clara came upstairs a while ago. She didn’t want dinner.”

I frowned immediately.

She didn’t want dinner.

Say

That confirmed it: something definitely happened. Because Clara might be tired, stressed, or upset …but she never fails to come down to dinner with me. Even if it’s just for a few minutes…

I climb the stairs, my steps heavier than usual.

When I open our bedroom door, the sound of the shower is gone. Only the scent of her soap fills

the air. And then I see her. She’s standing near the dresser, her damp hair cascading down her

back. A white robe tied loosely in a knot around her waist, so beautiful… and so distant at the same

time.

She looks up as soon as she hears me enter.

“You’re here…”

Her voice tries to sound normal, but it doesn’t quite work.

I close the door behind me without taking my eyes off her.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

Too fast, too automatic.

I walk slowly toward her.

“Clara…”

“I’m just tired today.”

I study her closely, her eyes, her posture. The way she avoids holding my gaze for more than two seconds. And then I know. Something happened, something serious.

I move even closer until I’m standing right in front of her. I tuck a damp strand of hair behind her

ear.

“Look at me.”

She does so slowly, and her expression immediately pains me. Like she’s been crying, like she’s

spent hours trying to stand on her own.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

I let out a dry laugh through my nose.

“That was a terrible lie.”

She lowers her gaze, and that confirms everything.

I’run a hand along my jaw, trying to stay calm. Because something inside me is starting to stir.

“Was it at the office?”

Silence.

“Did you have any problems?”

She doesn’t answer, she just presses her fingers against the fabric of her robe.

I walk to the bed and sit on the edge. Then I look at her again.

“Come here.”

Clara hesitates for a few seconds, but ends up slowly approaching.

gently take her hand and pull her slightly until she’s sitting on my lap. Her body presses against

mine automatically, and yet… she’s still tense.

I run one hand down her damp back while the other rests on her waist.

“Now,” I murmur. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

She shakes her head slowly.

“I don’t want to ruin the night.”

“It’s already been ruined since you lied to me.”

That makes her eyes snap up at me. I don’t say it harshly. But I do say it seriously, because I hate

lies. And she knows it.

“Ethan…”

“I don’t care what happened. We’ll work it out. But don’t ever lie to me like that again.”

She swallows hard; I can feel her breath starting to break. And then I get even more worried, I

slowly stroke her arm.

“Did someone do something to you?”

The way she stays still immediately puts me on alert.

“Clara.”

“It wasn’t anything serious…”

My jaw tightens.

“Who?”
