Ever since Pierce had rushed out to find Seraphina that morning, Riley hadn't seen him for three days.

She didn't care if he was off messing around with Seraphina again. She was more curious if Seraphina had managed to convince Pierce to go through with the divorce. Would he show up at the clerk's office tomorrow to finalize the paperwork?

The next morning at eight o'clock, Riley called Pierce. "The waiting period is over. The clerk's office opens at eight-thirty. When are you heading over?"

"I'm in Statenbury on a business trip."

Riley frowned. He knew the waiting period was up, yet he chose exactly this moment to leave town. "Are you doing this on purpose?"

"Doing what on purpose?"

"Stalling."

"I'll be back this afternoon."

"What time? The office closes at five-thirty."

"Two o'clock."

"Fine. I'll wait for you at the entrance at two."

The line fell silent for a couple of seconds before he hung up.

Riley couldn't quite figure out what Pierce was playing at.

If he didn't want the divorce, he could have easily used the business trip as an excuse not to come back at all.

But he was rushing back.

Yet when she said she'd wait for him at the courthouse, he hadn't agreed.

Did he want the divorce or not?

Unable to make sense of it, Riley decided not to waste her energy overthinking. Whatever his attitude was, she was determined to see this divorce through.

At two o'clock sharp, Riley arrived at the clerk's office. She waited for half an hour, but there was no sign of Pierce.
