Watching her long lashes flutter in panic, Sebastian said, "Seatbelt."
He was just helping her buckle up. She had nearly died of a heart attack.
Right as Sebastian reached for the strap, Riley grabbed it first. "I've got it."
Sebastian cast a glance at her wildly flushed cheeks, offered a flat "Mhm," and retreated to his seat.
The moment his overpowering presence withdrew, Riley let out a quiet sigh of relief and quickly snapped the buckle into place.
The hospital was incredibly close to The Grand Regency, so the drive only took a few minutes. His penthouse was on the 15th floor. She rang the doorbell, and Franklin opened the door.
Seeing Riley, Franklin looked at her like she was an angel descending from heaven. "Riley, thank God you're back."
Noticing his expression of absolute despair, she asked, "What happened?"
"Mrs. Gable is in the kitchen cooking, and she asked me to watch Alora. I'm a grown man. I don't know the first thing about babies!"
Franklin was tall, broad, and built like a rugged soldier. He was visibly the exact opposite of someone who should be left alone with an infant. "I'm sorry for the trouble, Mr. Finch."
Franklin felt that babysitting was infinitely harder than working for Sebastian. He was terrified to touch her, terrified to hold her, and even terrified to speak above a whisper for fear of scaring her. It was pure torture.
Riley walked in, and Alora clearly recognized her, waving her tiny fists and kicking her feet. A huge, gummy smile broke across the baby's face, as if begging: Pick me up, Mommy!
Her heart completely melted. She rushed over, scooping her daughter out of the crib. Alora instantly nuzzled into her chest, blinking her big, dark eyes up at her as if she had missed her terribly.
Riley couldn't resist pressing kiss after kiss to her daughter's chubby cheeks.
Watching the affectionate scene under the warm living room lights, the coldness in Sebastian's eyes melted away. A strange warmth bloomed in his chest, like spring breathing life into a dead tree, or a seed finally breaking through barren soil.
Just then, the phone in Riley's pocket started ringing. Holding the baby made it impossible to answer.
Sebastian closed the distance in a few long strides. "Let me hold her."
