Every second felt like an eternity; for the first time, Riley Vance thought the elevator was moving too slowly.
Ding!
As the chime announced its arrival, Riley’s already chaotic heartbeat hitched, pounding even faster against her ribs.
Finally.
She heard the man in front of her moving the mattress.
Soon, his tall, broad-shouldered figure stepped aside.
Riley instantly felt as if the air had become breathable again; earlier, wrapped entirely in Sebastian St. John's scent, she had felt a suffocating wave of tension that left her gasping.
Even after entering the apartment, her pulse refused to settle. "Sebastian, take a seat. I'll go make you some honey water."
"Mhm."
Riley hurried into the kitchen, pulled a bottle of water from the fridge, and gulped down half of it. The ice-cold liquid slid down her throat, finally cooling the frantic heat in her chest.
She prepared a glass of warm honey water and returned to the living room. Sebastian’s long, lean frame was leaning heavily against the back of the sofa, his eyes closed.
Did he drink too much and pass out?
Riley walked over and called out softly, "Sebastian."
Sebastian slowly opened his eyes. In his blurry vision, Riley’s slender figure stood out, her features delicate and stunningly pure. The overhead light cascaded down, wrapping her in a soft halo, making her look radiant and breathtakingly ethereal.
She didn't need to do a thing. Just standing quietly in front of him was enough to send his heart racing.
Seeing him staring at her so intently, Riley couldn't help but ask, "Are you drunk?"
He only ever stared at her like this when he was intoxicated.
Afraid that if he kept looking, he would lose control and pull her into his arms, Sebastian raised a hand, draping his forearm over his eyes. "I'm not drunk."
Riley immediately noticed the cuts on his fingers from the broken glass a few days ago. They had scabbed over into a dark crimson.
