Pierce pressed his lips together, his expression turning serious. "I want to remarry her."
"You're a fool!" Arthur was so angry he slammed his cane hard against the floor. "Have you forgotten how much of a scene she made demanding that divorce? Look at her attitude toward your mother today. Does she look like someone who wants to get back together?"
Thinking back to what Riley had said at the restaurant tonight—that getting back together was absolutely impossible—a suffocating wave of despair washed over Pierce's chest. "She's just still angry. She hasn't forgiven me yet. What happened tonight wasn't her fault. Mom was the one who attacked her without knowing the full story."
"I..."
Arthur shot an icy glare, and Beatrice swallowed her words immediately.
Arthur looked back at Pierce, speaking with earnest gravity. "Divorce, the balcony incident last time, and now this dinner—whenever you get involved with her, it's a disaster. She's just a woman from a humble background. She can't even compare to a strand of hair on a proper socialite. Wake up and don't let this so-called love make you lose your mind."
"I've tried to forget her, but I can't," Pierce said, his eyes carrying the possessive determination of a man used to being in control. "Since I can't forget, I won't. She was mine to begin with!"
Arthur's chest ached with fury. His grandson was exceptional in every way, except when it came to women. "If you couldn't forget her, what were you doing before? You married her, yet you still fooled around outside, and then got caught cheating. Now you're stubbornly insisting on remarrying her. Do you even know what you're doing?"
By the end of his rant, Arthur was pounding his cane against the floor continuously, his face flushed red with rage.
In contrast to Arthur's fury, Pierce remained completely calm. "I admit I was wrong before. I underestimated Riley's loyalty to our marriage. From now on, I will devote myself entirely to her. She will come back to me."
