"What is wrong with you? Why are you so stubborn?" Elaine threw Riley's hand away in a fit of anger.

Seeing Elaine's tone turning sour, George quickly stepped in. "We're not forcing you to remarry him. We just feel terrible for Alora. She's so little, and she doesn't have a father. Can you really bear to let her grow up missing out on a father's love?"

Riley did feel terrible about that, but compared to letting her daughter live with a father who lacked basic moral decency, she would rather raise her alone. At least she could provide a clean, uncomplicated environment. "I will love her twice as much. I won't let her suffer."

"A mother's love can't replace a father's. Alora is small now, but when she grows up, kids will make fun of her for not having a dad. What are you going to do then?"

Riley looked straight at George. "Pierce will always be Alora's father. I've never denied that. My divorce simply means I have nothing to do with him anymore. I never severed his relationship with Alora."
