The butler reported, "Mrs. Landon didn't come downstairs for breakfast or lunch today. Around twelve-thirty, she went out. When she came back, she went straight to her room to sleep. The maid went up to ask if she wanted anything to eat but couldn't wake her. That's when they found a half-empty bottle of sleeping pills on her nightstand."
Pierce Landon recalled how tearful and hesitant Beatrice had looked last night. She hadn't been herself. Perhaps she had run into some kind of trouble, but upon learning she had hurt Riley Vance, he had left in a fit of anger.
If he had been a little more attentive then, if he had just asked a few more questions, would she have told him what happened? Would she have avoided this suicide attempt today?
Arthur Landon Sr. kept a stern expression, his brow furrowed with annoyance. "She has a perfectly good life. I don't know what kind of drama she's trying to stir up now."
Hearing this, Pierce remembered Beatrice's complaint from last night—that he was distancing himself, that her status in the Landon family had plummeted. He had been too angry to care at the time. Only now, hearing Arthur's harsh words, did he realize the severity of the situation.
He frowned at his grandfather. "Arthur, my mother's life is hanging by a thread right now. How can you say something like that? Who uses their own life to stir up drama?"
Arthur was slightly taken aback, not expecting his grandson to suddenly stand up for Beatrice.
Pierce sat down in a nearby chair, casting anxious glances at the closed doors of the emergency room.
After an agonizingly long time, the doors finally opened. Pierce immediately stood up and hurried over. "Doctor, how is my mother?"
"Mrs. Landon is out of danger," the doctor replied. "She should wake up in four to twelve hours."
"Thank you for your hard work."
The doctor looked at Pierce, hesitating as if he had more to say.
"Is there something else?" Pierce asked.
"Mr. Landon, while we were reviving her, we noticed some... anomalies. Perhaps we should discuss this in my office?"
Seeing the doctor's grave expression, Pierce assumed Beatrice had contracted some incurable disease. His heart sank. "Lead the way."
