“I'm looking to get into the medical equipment business, and I wanted to ask if you know Zachary Chambers, the second young master of the Chambers Family?” As Pierce spoke, his eyes were locked on Riley, terrified of missing even a micro-expression on her face.
Riley's expression remained flat. “I know him, but we're not close.”
She didn't dodge the question, nor did she look guilty. It seemed his guess was right: if the person pulling the strings really was Zachary, Riley clearly didn't like him. It was just a one-sided obsession on Zachary's part.
Relief washed over Pierce, and the corners of his mouth curled into a smile. “If you're not close, don't worry about it.”
Seeing Pierce staring at her with a beaming smile, Riley frowned, completely baffled as to why he was suddenly so happy. “How am I supposed to eat with you staring at me like that?”
Pierce withdrew his gaze, glancing at the simple home-cooked meal on the table. “Your body is still recovering; you really should eat something more nutritious. Tomorrow, I'll—”
“Pierce.” Riley cut him off. “You have no right to dictate how I live my life. From now on, unless it's something for Alora, don't bring anything to my home. Otherwise, don't blame me when I throw it out right in front of you.”
A flash of hurt crossed Pierce's eyes. “Riley, I'm Alora's father. Do you really have to make things this hostile between us?”
“If it weren't for Alora, I wouldn't even let you set foot in my house.” Riley coldly issued an eviction notice. “You've seen Alora. Now get out.”
Pierce looked at her with intense earnestness. “Riley, I know I was wrong. I just want to make it up to you and Alora.”
Riley put down her chopsticks and glared at him severely. “Pierce, I'll say this one last time. You and I are finished. I will never remarry you. Right now, every time I look at your face, I'm reminded of everything you've done. The only thing I feel is absolute disgust.”
Disgust. She actually said looking at him disgusted her?
Pierce's eyelashes trembled, and it felt as if his heart had been mercilessly crushed. The pain was excruciating, piercing him right to the bone.
Riley ignored his slightly reddened eyes and turned to look toward the door. “See yourself out.”
Pierce's fingers slowly curled into fists. After a few seconds, he released them, stood up, and left.
That night, after showering, Riley was sitting in bed reading when Winona Spencer called. “What are you doing, Riley?”
Her voice sounded completely drained of its usual energy. Normally, Winona was like a little ball of sunshine, radiating vitality even through the phone. Her sudden shift naturally worried Riley. “What's wrong? Are you feeling sick?”
“No, it's just...” Winona paused. “I just feel a little down.”
Riley set her book aside, leaned against the headboard, and gave Winona her full attention. “Why are you feeling down? Did something bad happen at school?”
The other end fell silent.
Riley didn't push. She just waited patiently.
