“I'd like to ask for your help with something.”
Sebastian's long fingers continued to slowly stir the coffee in front of him. He lifted his gaze and glanced at Pierce. This was the first time Pierce had ever explicitly asked for his help. “What kind of help?”
“I want to remarry Riley.”
Sebastian's stirring paused for a fraction of a second. The very next moment, he set the spoon down and looked at Pierce. “I can't help you with that.”
“I'm not asking for your help with the remarriage itself. I know that's entirely up to me...” Pierce hesitated for a moment before continuing, “Zachary Chambers has his eyes on Riley. I know you two are good friends. Could you put a word in and tell him to stop harassing her?”
Sebastian thought he had misheard. “Zachary has his eyes on Riley?”
Pierce nodded. “Yes. Do you remember the sudden news leak about my affair right before Riley and I got divorced?”
Sebastian picked up his coffee cup and took a small sip. “Yes.”
“I've always felt someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes. The news blew up overnight, and no matter what I did, I couldn't suppress it. It was clearly orchestrated, and that person was Zachary. He did it to force Riley and me to divorce.”
The ghost of a smile tugged at the corners of Sebastian's lips. It wasn't an obvious smile—just a subtle curl of his mouth. “How do you know it was him?”
“I've been trying to track this person down ever since the divorce, but they vanished into thin air. I couldn't find a single trace. It wasn't until I came to Statenbury this time and found out Zachary actually brought a top-tier lawyer to the police station to pick Riley up. That level of attention was far too suspicious, so I had my people look into him.
“That's when I discovered that right before the divorce, he was making calls to Riverport. But because he was in Statenbury pulling the strings remotely, I couldn't trace it back to him at the time.”
Sebastian's long fingers lightly tapped against the edge of his coffee cup—a subtle sign he was thoroughly enjoying this.
Everything had fallen into place perfectly.
Seeing that Sebastian didn't look surprised at all, Pierce wondered if he had known Zachary was the mastermind all along.
But he had said nothing and done nothing, just watching everything unfold from the shadows?
It was only when Grandpa Arthur explicitly asked for his help that he offered a strategy, and even then, he didn't bother settling the score with Zachary.
First, because he and Zachary were good friends. Second, because he didn't want to drag the St. John Family into a war with the Chambers Family over the Landons' mess.
“Is that all?”
The man's crisp, deep voice pulled Pierce out of his thoughts. “There's also the kidnapping incident in Riverport recently. You probably don't know this, Sebastian, but after Riley was taken, Seraphina Sutton was kidnapped as well, and she was forcefully assaulted.”
Sebastian's tapping fingers paused as he looked up at Pierce. He actually managed to dig that up, but... “Only Ms. Sutton?”
Pierce's pupils violently contracted. Did Sebastian know Beatrice had been taken too?
