The Day I Stopped Waiting Was the Day He Started Begging novel Chapter 10

Legally married.

What kind of married man forced his wife to live like a widow for two straight years?

Susan's brutal honesty left York entirely speechless. He stared at his cheap, rough grey bedsheet and simply pressed his lips into a tight line.

When Madeline finally arrived at Azure Bay, Susan was outside hanging York's clothes on the balcony.

As she walked inside, she saw York sitting in the living room, talking on his phone.

His tone was lazy and utterly detached.

"...If she's sick, you should call a doctor. Why are you calling me instead of 911? I studied law, not medicine."

"Pray? What good is praying if she's sick? I don't need divine intervention, just keep an eye on her."

The person on the other end of the line said something else, and York's expression grew even colder. "...You said it yourself, that was when we were kids. How old is she now? I can't spend my entire life revolving around one person."

He hung up the phone, only to see Madeline standing perfectly still in the entryway.

Their eyes met. Madeline paused, a wave of bitter resentment rising in her chest as she asked, "Are you sleeping here tonight?"

York raised an eyebrow, silently confirming that he was.

Madeline pressed her lips together. Just as she was about to speak, a text from Fiona popped up on her screen.

"Evie has a mild fever. Do you have time to come check on her tonight?"

Thinking of her daughter, Madeline's face instantly shifted. She shot one last glance at the infuriating man in her living room, spun around, and walked into the bedroom to change clothes.

"Then you get some sleep." Madeline gave him a flat look. "Perfect timing, I have plans tonight anyway."

York stared at her.

Madeline threw on her shoes and headed for the door. She was dressed in a sleek white blazer set, carrying a tote bag, her makeup incredibly light.

Yet under the hallway lights, she looked breathtakingly elegant.

He thought of Caleb's weird cousin, then thought of all the men who had chased her relentlessly in college.

"You're going out dressed like that?" York shifted his posture, his dark eyes silently drinking in her appearance as he drawled, "Is Ms. Monroe going out to work, or going out to cheat on me?"

"I've dressed exactly like this for the last two years." Madeline snapped, her patience gone. "If I were cheating, the paint would have dried a long time ago."

Refusing to waste another second on him, she grabbed her bag and walked out.
