Chapter 843: Rules For Evie

Nathaniel arrived at the lounge after the butler informed him of Arthur’s invitation.

"Did you call for me?" Nathaniel asked as he looked at Arthur, who was looking outside the massive window, his back facing the door where Nathaniel was standing.

The room was lit with multiple lamps, and the fire was burning in the fireplace on one of the walls. The atmosphere felt awkwardly silent.

Arthur turned to look at him, his expression calm as he offered a light nod. "Come, let’s have some wine."

Nathaniel stared at him for a moment before finally stepping in.

Arthur smiled lightly. "This is your home, Nathan. Why so awkward?" He walked ahead towards the set of chairs and sat in one as he looked at him. "Or you thought I called you here so I can beg you to accept my sister, huh?"

Nathaniel walked towards the chair. "I hope that’s not the case."

Arthur chuckled. "That would be the worst thing I would be asking for my sister, so you can relax."

"Good that you know what’s good for her," Nathaniel countered and sat in the chair opposite him. A small circular table with a wine bottle and glasses separated them.

Arthur poured wine for them in two glasses. He pushed one towards Nathaniel, while he himself picked the other one.

Nathaniel picked it up, and both friends had a few moments of quietness as they savoured the wine.

"You called me here, so I believe you have something to say," Nathaniel finally decided to speak.

Arthur looked at him, a small smile on his lips that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Why? Am I not allowed to just wish to enjoy some wine with my friend?"

"You are, always," Nathaniel said. "Despite whatever, you will always be my friend for me."

Arthur hummed and said, "But as you mentioned, maybe there is something I should say, or something we should talk about. As I am leaving tomorrow morning."

Nathaniel had a silent sip and said, "Go ahead."

Arthur seemed to quiet his nerves with a few sips of wine, as if it would help him thread his words properly.

"How long since we have been friends?" Arthur commented, not really a question.

"Since forever, it seems," Nathaniel responded calmly.

Arthur chuckled. "That seems just right, as we know each other so well, and maybe that’s why we are friends even now."

Nathaniel hummed in agreement.

"As I said, we know each other so well," Arthur began. "Then you should know I understand your side as well. I understand your reasons and why you are like this. As a friend, if I won’t understand, then who would? And I had been supporting you for what and how truly you are. So, just because of my sister, I won’t be asking you to change and forget your reasons. Would I?"

"I would be glad if you won’t," Nathaniel said.

"I won’t," Arthur said with surety. "I won’t ask you to change. But I can only ask you to treat my sister well, now that she is married here, the lady of this home. And this is where she is going to spend her life."

Nathaniel listened to him quietly.

Arthur continued, "I am not asking you to love her, have kids with her, or anything you don’t ever want to do. I just want respect, peace, and freedom for my sister. That’s it. I am sure my sister understands, and she won’t be a bother or disturb your life. She is much more mature for her age, even better than any of us."

In response, Nathaniel quietly had a few sips, a silence settling between them for a while, until he decided to speak.

"As you said, she is the lady of this home. She will get everything she deserves," Nathaniel said, "The half of the residence on the other side will solely belong to her. Everything will be provided to her, she will lack nothing. She will be free to do whatever she wants and live the way she wants. Just that, this part of the residence won’t allow her to enter."

Arthur understood the meaning. His sister wouldn’t ever experience love and acceptance from her husband, but she would get everything else.

"Good enough for her," Arthur said, a light smile on his lips, which didn’t really mean he was happy. It was a mix of hurt and relief he was feeling for his sister.

As a brother, only this much he could do for her.

But Arthur said anyway, "In the future, if she wants to return, I will take her with me. I know my parents won’t allow it. So I will take her to some place where she can live a protected life under my watch."

"I won’t stop you," Nathaniel assured.
