Chapter 148

Ropes came crashing down from the helicopters, snapping taut against the wind as soldiers slid down them fast, boots hitting the dock in perfect rhythm with rifles already trained on Smith’s men.

Nobody needed to be told twice. Smith’s men dropped their weapons instantly and sank to their knees, hands laced behind their heads, surrendering without so much as a word of protest, leaving Smith standing there completely alone as the circle of soldiers tightened around him.

He gulped hard, sweat beading on his forehead as the reality of the situation crashed over him. Just minutes ago he had been laughing, spraying cash into the air like a king, and now he stood surrounded, exposed, and utterly powerless.

“Look,” he stammered, raising both hands, “all I ever did was business. I didn’t scam anybody. They came to me!!

Marcus stepped closer, his face unreadable, clearly not buying a single word. “Bind him,” he said flatly, already turning away as though the conversation had ended.

Smith panicked. He spun on his good leg and bolted toward the water’s edge, arms pumping, desperate for any chance at escape.

Boom!

A single gunshot cracked through the night, and Smith’s leg buckled beneath him.

He crashed onto the dock, clutching his thigh, screaming, “Arrrrgh! fuck my leg! You actually shot me!” His voice cracked with pain and disbelief, echoing across the water.

A tall figure emerged from among the soldiers, walking with sharp, deliberate steps until he stood directly in front of Marcus, then bowed low.

“Boss.”

From behind the crates, Travis’s mouth fell open. “What the heck,” he whispered, pressing a hand to his own chest in disbelief. “Is that… Commander Coblen? Bowing? For Marcus? How is that even possible?”

He blinked hard, certain his eyes were deceiving him, and shook his head slowly. “No, no, he must be bowing for Natalie.”

Since Natalie stood right beside Marcus, Travis convinced himself that had to be the explanation, though nothing about the scene made real sense to him. He crouched lower, heart hammering, and muttered, “This is way bigger than I thought.”

Coblen straightened up, gave Marcus a respectful nod, then turned and walked toward Smith, who still writhed on the ground clutching his bleeding leg. Without hesitation, Coblen pressed his boot straight down onto the wound.

“AHHHH!” Smith shrieked, thrashing violently against the pain, tears streaming down his face.

Coblen showed no reaction. He snapped his fingers, and two soldiers grabbed Smith under the arms, hauling him up despite his screaming and dragging him toward a waiting van.

“Investigate him thoroughly,” Marcus said, his tone final. “Trace every account, every hidden stash, and make sure every stolen money gets returned to the respective people he robbed.”

“Understood, boss,” Coblen replied, already relaying the order to his men.

Travis still had no idea what he had just witnessed. He crouched there, mind racing, trying to piece together how a

scammer’s arrest had turned into something that looked like a full-scale military operation.

Coblen left first, barking commands as soldiers loaded Smith and his men into the vehicles. Then Marcus and Natalie walked off the dock together, unhurried, as though none of the chaos around them mattered at all.

For a moment, the dock fell completely silent, nothing but waves and Travis there Then, faint at first but growing louder, came the wail of sirens.

Wee-woo, wee-woo.

The cops had finally arrived.

The cop cars screeched to a stop, and Travis stumbled out of the backseat before they had even fully parked, straightening his jacket like he’d been part of something heroic. Doors flew open all around, and officers poured out fast, weapons holstered but faces tense. Among them was Jessica, her heart hammering so hard she could feel it in her throat. She spotted Travis and rushed straight for him, breathless. “Where is he? Did he run? Please tell me he didn’t get away.”

The lead officer jogged up right behind her, scanning the dock. “Where’s the suspect?”

Travis puffed his chest out, seizing the moment. “Where the heck were you guys? I called you ages ago!” He threw his hands up dramatically. “Since I figured you’d all be useless anyway, I already called the military myself to handle it.”

Jessica frowned hard, and so did the officers standing nearby. “The military?” she asked, baffled. “How does something like this even involve the military?”

Travis nodded firmly, like a man who had everything under control. “They already took care of it. Smith’s been arrested. Go look over there, you’ll find a blood trail, he got shot trying to run.”

Jessica’s eyes narrowed with disbelief. “You called them? You personally called the military?”

“Fortunately,” Travis said, nodding again, chest still puffed. “I’ve got a friend who’s close with Commander Coblen. One call and they showed up.” He was lying through his teeth, every word of it, just desperate to look good in front of Jessica.

Jessica still couldn’t wrap her head around it. “Commander Coblen? Are you absolutely sure?”

“A hundred percent,” Travis said without blinking.

Jessica sighed, brushing a hand through her hair, clearly unconvinced but too exhausted to argue further. This was how Smith he claimed he knew someone from the Langstone family just to put her into this trouble.

The team leader beside her exchanged a skeptical glance with another officer, neither of them buying Travis’s story, but nobody had proof to call him out either.

Just then, Ding!

Jessica’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and her eyes went wide. Thirty million dollars. A deposit of thirty million dollars had just landed in her account.
