Marcus recovered first.

The assassin tried to dive for the fallen pistol but Marcus drove his foot into the man’s ribs and sent him rolling across the concrete. The gun skidded farther into the shadows.
Marcus didn’t give him space to breathe. He grabbed the man by the collar and slammed him hard against the wall. The impact echoed in the narrow yard.
The assassin swung a fist. Marcus ducked and answered with a brutal punch to his stomach. Air rushed out of the man as he doubled over. Marcus drove his knee into his face and the crack of impact rang out.
The man staggered backward, disoriented.
Marcus advanced like a storm.
He punched him across the jaw. Then again. And again. Each hit snapping the assassin’s head to the side. Blood sprayed from his mouth. He tried to block but Marcus was too fast, too angry, too relentless.
The assassin attempted another desperate lunge toward where the gun had fallen. Marcus caught him from behind, hooked his arm around his neck, and dragged him back before throwing him hard to the
ground.
The man hit the floor flat.
Marcus dropped on him and started raining punches down without pause. His fists crashed into the man’s face, his cheeks, his nose. The assassin’s arms grew weaker with each blow until they barely
lifted to defend him.
“You killed my father!” Marcus roared as he struck him again.
The assassin’s face was already swollen and bloodied. One eye was nearly shut. His breathing turned rough and uneven.
Marcus grabbed him by the front of his clothes and lifted him slightly off the ground.
“Who sent you?” he demanded. “Why did you kill my father?!”
The man looked up at him through the blood and swelling.
And he smirked.
Marcus frowned. Something about that expression was wrong. It wasn’t fear.
Then he saw the assassin’s hand began to glow.
At first it was faint. Then brighter. A strange blue aura wrapped around his fist, lighting up the dark yard like a small flame. The glow hummed softly, unnatural and alive.
Marcus stared. “What is that?”

Toom!
The glowing fist drove straight into Marcus’s stomach.
The impact felt nothing like a normal punch. It was as if a heavy object had exploded inside him. A violent force tore through his body and lifted him completely off the ground.
Marcus flew backward and crashed hard against the wall behind him before dropping to the floor.
Pain ripped through him in waves. His chest burned. His insides twisted. He coughed violently and a mouthful of blood spilled onto the concrete.
His vision blurred instantly.
He tried to push himself up but his arms refused to obey him. His body felt numb and distant like it no longer belonged to him.
The last thing he saw before darkness swallowed him was the assassin standing over him, bloodied face twisted into a satisfied smirk, the faint blue glow still fading from his hand.

Marcus’s head groaned as he tried to move.
He was lying flat on a soft surface but lifting himself felt painfully difficult. His chest burned and his stomach throbbed where the punch had landed. He forced his eyes open. Everything was blurry at first. Shapes moved in and out of focus while voices echoed faintly around him.
“Are you okay? Marcus, are you okay?”
The voice became clearer as his sight steadied.
Natalie.
He realized he was in his glamorous bedroom.
He tried to sit up quickly. Pain shot through him and he winced but ignored it.
“Father… is he okay?” he asked hurriedly.
Natalie’s expression fell. Her eyes turned red and she bowed her head slightly as tears slipped down.
“The doctors are hopeless,” she said quietly. “Father didn’t die. At the last moment he shifted his head. The bullet missed a vital point. They removed it, but… he is in a coma. The doctors said there is nothing they can do for now.”
Marcus let out a long breath and ran his hand over his face. After that such shot, he won’t be okay.
“I should have stopped it. I suspected something was wrong but… shit.”

Natalie moved closer and hugged him. “It’s not your fault.”
Marcus sniffed and slowly pulled away. “How did I get here? I remember fighting one of them. I nearly had him. Then he used something… something magical. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Natalie frowned. “I arrived there early. By the time I got to the yard the man had already run away. I didn’t see anything magical.”
Marcus shook his head. “That thing is what knocked me out. It wasn’t normal. I know what I felt.”
