He then answered the phone, right in front of her. An elegant female voice came through. “Sean, are you finished?”

Sean suddenly leaned in close to Tracy, holding the phone out slightly as he spoke into it. “You should go ahead. I’ll tell my mother we’re not a good match.”

He hung up before the woman could reply, slid the phone back into his pocket, and looked down at Tracy. “Are you satisfied with that?”

Tracy instinctively looked away, pressing her lips together. She said nothing.

Sean glanced at his watch and released her. “I’m heading back to the office to handle some work. Have dinner ready for me tonight.”

His tone was that of a husband instructing his wife, expecting her to have a meal waiting when he came home.

Tracy hated that feeling. She had heard those exact words far too many times over the past few years. But the number of times Chandler had actually come home for dinner was pitifully small. He would give her hope, then let her spiral from disappointment to despair. Everyone had blamed her for being unreasonable, but Chandler’s behavior had been the root cause of her near-madness.

He had been cheating on her with Yvonne, taking her to all sorts of events. Everyone knew about their relationship. She was the only one kept in the dark, treated like an idiot, as if they could hide it from her forever. He had enjoyed the thrill of the affair while simultaneously enjoying her unconditional devotion.

Worst of all, he had told people behind her back that she was just the Gaunt family’s free maid.

Secrets never stay buried. Had they ever considered that she would find out? Or did they just assume that, even if she did, her love for Chandler was so deep that she would just compromise and forgive, over and over again?

Thinking of her past self, she felt pathetic. No wonder Chandler had despised her. She despised herself.

Thank god she had escaped. She would never be trapped by love again. Even if she did date, she would keep a clear head.

She smoothed her wrinkled clothes and walked out of the restroom. Thankfully, no one was around. It would have been hard to explain why she was coming out of the men’s room.

As they walked past a jewelry store, Tracy spotted Yvonne, Faye, and Quincy.

Yvonne was trying on a necklace, admiring herself in the mirror like a spoiled princess.

The moment Natalie saw them, her face went cold. “I guess we forgot to check the almanac. What bad luck.”

Quincy was the first to

see them. A mocking smile spread across her face. “Running away? Are we feeling guilty? Afraid we shouldn’t? I heard Mr. Waylon is under

I see somethin investigation for giving you the exam questions. If I were you, I’d be hiding at home, too afraid to even open the door. But look at you, still parading around town.”
