Natalie bit her lip as she stared at the couple across from her. Her appetite was completely dead. She couldn’t understand what she lacked compared to Doreen. Why was it that Doreen could be with Jackson
hile she couldn’t even catch his eve?
“Yes” Natalic replied, het voice distant
“Oh that really is a shame” Doreen took the utensils from the waiter and sighed. “Back then, you didn’t hesitate to break ties with your family just to be with him, and now it’s over just like that. I really didn’t expect that years of history couldn’t stand up to a few soft words from some other girl. You two made such a big deal of going public back then. I thought you’d be together forever, but look at you now
Years ago, Doreen had a huge crush on Leon. He didn’t come from money, but he was good-looking, and she had chased him for a while before he and Natalie went public. Leon never rejected her outright but never gave her a straight answer either, leading her to believe she had a chance
When they finally announced they were together, she had been bitter for a long time. Natalie had given up so many opportunities and even her family for that man after graduation. To think that after all that, it was this easy for him to walk away.
Under the table, Jackson tugged on Doreen’s sleeve, signaling her to stop. She was clearly twisting the knife in Natalie’s heart. Seeing Natalie on the verge of tears, he felt a pang of guilt.
Tracy glared at Doreen before pulling Natalie to her feet. “Jackson, enjoy your meal. We’re leaving.
She couldn’t stay a second longer. She knew Natalie couldn’t handle this, and it was obvious Doreen was doing this on purpose.
“Okay” Jackson replied.
Doreen, however, took a sarcastic tone. “Why leave so soon? You ordered a whole table of food, and the two of us can’t finish it all. Sit down and eat before you go. I was just joking with Natalie, don’t take it so seriously
If Natalie couldn’t handle this, she was in for a miserable time.
“No thanks. We’ll pay our own bill,” Tracy snapped. “Natalie, let’s go. I’m taking you out for barbecue.”
Once they were gone. Jackson’s face immediately darkened. “Doreen, was that necessary**
Doreen didn’t care. She gave him a harmless smile. “Yes, it was. Didn’t you say you wanted up on you for good? If I didn’t hit her with something heavy, how is she supposed to lose he you’re acting all indecisive?”
Jackson opened his mouth to argue, but ultimately said nothing
In reality, neither Doreen nor Jackson were interested in each other. Jackson felt he wasn’t good enough for Natalie. He had made a deal with Doreen paying her to act as his girlfriend by satisfy his tarrily pressure to marry and to force Natalie to move on
But seeing the hurt in Natalie’s eyes made his heart

feelings obvious, especially after she kissed him last night. He was scared. His family was ordinary, while Natalie was a pampered heiress. Their social statuses were worlds apart.
At the barbecue place, the two women ate in silence. Natalie was still out of it. her mood in the gutter. Her phone rang, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw it was her mother. She figured Lana had already gone to them to play the victim.
