Maloney: "Stop whining."

"I really do," she explained hastily. "My job got canceled last minute, and Cassidy texted me that she was at the same gala as you. We haven't seen each other in over a week, so I wanted to come say hi and give you a ride home."

She rattled it all off in one breath, inhaled sharply, and added, "But the traffic was awful, I got a little dizzy, and accidentally bumped the car. I absolutely trust you!"

She had clearly crashed because she saw Seraphina talking to him.

And yet, she was still making excuses.

Maloney bluntly shifted the topic. "Are you in contact with Seraphina privately?"

Startled, Nora shook her head. "No."

"Last time she came to my office, what did she say to you?" he pressed. "Tell me her exact words."

Nora: "That was so long ago."

Maloney: "You have a good memory."

Good things might slip her mind, but she could hold onto a grudge for a lifetime.

Nora hesitated.

Maloney had his arms wrapped around her from behind. Seeing her fall silent, he gripped her waist, trying to turn her to face him.

Nora wasn't ready to look him in the eye.

She twisted her head away so hard her whole body curled up like a pretzel.

"I'll tell you, I'll tell you!" she surrendered instantly. "She said the two of you belong together, and she came back to steal you away."

"What else?"

"She told me to step aside."

"And?"
