On the drive home, Nora couldn't stop thinking about what Jasmine had said.
While listening to her earlier, Nora had felt a wave of sadness.
But thinking it over, it was actually something to celebrate.
Jasmine had finally let go of so much heavy baggage.
The fact that she had changed so drastically in such a short time was partly because she was finally out of the toxic environment that kept her down, and partly because she had met Felix, someone raised in a fiercely loving and happy family.
A home full of love raises people full of love. They are emotionally rich, overwhelmingly positive, and exude a confidence that illuminates everyone around them.
Nora understood exactly how Jasmine was feeling.
Truthfully, Jasmine should have left her family much sooner.
Nora and Cassidy had urged her to do it countless times.
People get multiple chances to escape their toxic families as they grow up.
Turning eighteen, going away for college, getting a job, getting married.
Jasmine had missed every single exit ramp.
She had pinned all her hopes on marriage.
Maybe she had invested too much hope into it, or maybe she knew it was her final lifeline. But when she realized that marriage wasn't going to fix anything, it served as a brutal wake-up call.
And when she finally woke up, she realized how bright the world outside actually was.
Nora had experienced that exact same emotional journey.
She had just woken up much earlier.
Back in high school, Nora had resolutely chosen to live in the dorms instead of at home.
Her mother had completely opposed it. Vivian Cole hadn't even wanted Nora to attend school. She hated the idea of Nora outshining Bella Monroe and only saw her as a bargaining chip for the family's benefit. Her father had been entirely absent, likely forgetting he even had a second daughter.
So, Nora had called her older siblings.
Diana Dodge showed up to sign the paperwork and gave her enough money to comfortably finish college.
David Dodge rented an apartment near the campus under his own name and handed her a generous sum of cash as well.
She stayed in the dorms during the week and lived in the apartment on weekends and holidays.
Because of her excellent grades, the principal and teachers always looked out for her.
Her classmates would often bring her extra food and supplies from their own homes.
It was completely normal to ask for help when you were small and vulnerable.
The world could be incredibly cruel, but it could also be overwhelmingly kind.
Jasmine had woken up late.
But not too late.
