The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 139

Last week, because Nora was too accommodating, too bound by her moral obligations to the marriage, refusing to throw a tantrum or voice her true desires, Maloney had deliberately terrified her by joking about having seven kids, just to coax her into acting a little spoiled.

He had been carrying the weight of that anxiety ever since.

He always feared that, given her sensitivity, she might suddenly overthink it and spiral into a state of guilt, distress, and relentless self-reflection.

It made him inexplicably uneasy.

With the autumn auction happening, Maloney decided to buy a mountain of jewelry, figuring he could overwhelm her with luxury at a critical moment to distract her.

But bad luck had it that Cassidy was also at the auction.

Nora already knew he was buying up jewels.

Since he couldn't keep it a surprise, he ordered his staff to deliver the entire haul straight to their house.

Then he immediately rushed out to pick her up.

He had conceded a piece of jade to Cassidy, and he intended to put that on Nora's tab.

Even though he hadn't genuinely wanted the jade to begin with, the bottom line was that Nora had asked him to back down, and he had.

Every little favor counted.

The wrap party Nora attended dragged on late into the night.

Maloney had been waiting in the car for nearly an hour.

Finally, she walked out—only to be openly hugging and kissing someone else right at the hotel entrance!

He was going to put this on her tab, too.

Maloney ruthlessly plucked Nora right out of Leona's arms.

Nora had drank so much she could barely stand. She tilted her head back in a daze, and seeing Maloney, she offered a silly, drunken smile. Her voice was soft and sweet. "Did you come to take me home?"

It was as if someone had gently squeezed his heart.

His anger instantly evaporated. "Yes, let's go home," he murmured.

Nora turned back and waved at Leona. "Leona, I'm heading out."

Just then, one of the investors spotted him. Sobering up in a sheer panic, he gasped, "M-Mr. Jameson?!"

Maloney ignored him, scooped Nora into his arms, and walked away.

Another investor blinked in confusion. "Who was that?"

"The boss! Maloney Jameson!"

"What?! Why is he here? Wait, who did he just carry off?"

"Where's Leona? Oh, she's still here."

"Wait, so who was he picking up?"
